MNEK opens up about his new single, working with Beyonce and that long-awaited debut album

MNEK (or Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike as he is formally known) has already scored big hits through collaborations with Zara Larsson and Rudimental, but is perhaps best known for the songs he's helped pen for other people like Beyonce's 'Hold Up', The Saturday's 'All Fired Up' and Madonna's 'Living For Love'. Now back with new single 'At Night (I Think About You)', we sat down to find out all about his new single and his plans for his long-awaited debut album...

You’ve just dropped ‘At Night (I Think About You)’, tell us about the writing and recording of that track, how did it come together?

"It started out as a voice note idea on my phone. then I played it to my boyfriend and my best friend and they helped me finish it and it became 'At Night (I Think About You)'. it's a song about insomnia and struggling to get over someone but it has the juxtaposition of a fun dance beat behind it. I really like the contrast."

How is your debut album coming along? When might it be with us?

"It's sounding really good! When it's out, I hope it gives the public a better understanding of my music. It's due next year."

What can you tell us about it? Which of the tracks we’ve already heard might feature?

"I don't know to be honest! I really want this to be an accurate body of work so the only song that you've heard which I know is definitely going on there is 'At Night (I Think About You)'."

You’ve always working with other artists and collaborating, what have you been up to recently?

"Working on my album for the most part and trying to tie it all up. It's been my main focus for a long time and cant wait to share it with all!"

You worked with Beyonce on ‘Hold Up’, how did that come about and how closely did you get to work with her?

"My publisher Jon Platt introduced us. She liked what I did and used it and sounded amazing doing it. I was a massive fan of Beyonce growing up so it was an absolute honour."

What are your plans for the summer? Are you booked for many festivals?

"I'll be promoting 'At Night (I Think About You)' and I'm playing V Festival, Boardmasters and Parklife this summer!"

What have been your favourite tracks of the year so far?

"I'd say Jorja Smith - 'Blue Lights', Ray BLK - '50/50' and Meghan Trainor - 'No'. Lots of lady pop!"
