hmv.com reviews… Miss May I @ Download Festival

Download Festival, the annual pilgrimage of thousands of rock and metal fans to a field just off the M1 to watch over 100 bands is here. hmv.com will be bringing you reviews and interviews from the festival across the weekend, but we kick off with Main Stage openers Miss May I...

Who?

Miss May I. Ohio hard rockers, recently returned with new record Rise Of The Lion (which you can preview by clicking on the icon on the right-hand side of the page).

Where?

Download Festival, opening up the festival’s Main Stage.

Was it full? And how were the crowd?

They were the first band on of the whole weekend, the most venomous of all the poisoned challenges at a festival. Plus it was baking hot, with plenty of punters already sporting some comedy sunburn. The crowd were obliging though and there were plenty of circle pits that bounced into life as the set went on.

So what was the set like? What did they play?

Half an hour, six songs, five bangers, and one semi-ballad titled 'Echoes'. The crowd were restless and baying for a chance to jump around,  something Miss May I delivered, with a set that absolutely full throttle in the most part. 'Relentless Chaos', 'Hero With No Name' and the closing 'Hey Mister' are all brutal slabs of metallic hard rock and kicked the festival into life in spectacular style.

Any good between song banter?

No banter, but lots of thank yous and talk of being honoured to play. They were clearly overwhelmed by the whole thing, which was quite sweet.

Did they put on much of a show?

Nice big banner, lots of energy, Rob Zombie and Avenged Sevenfold are on later and they’ve doubtless hogged all the pyro.

What was the highlight of the set?

The closing ‘Hey Mister’ packed an absolute whallop, it was the festival’s first big sing-a-long moment.

Where can I catch them next?

They’ve got a few more European festivals and then a big US tour. They’ll be over here later this year though, don’t you worry…
