hmv.com tips... Betty Who

Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we bring you electro popper Betty Who and her poptastic tunes...

Who Is She?

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, 22-year old Betty Who (real name Jessica Newham) caught the eye of many an A&R scout back in 2012 when her debut single 'Somebody Loves You', which she put out independently, caught fire online. Her debut EP 'The Movement' followed soon after, but what really drew attention to Who happened completely by chance. A man named Spencer Stout uploaded a YouTube clip of him proposing to his boyfriend Dustin in a flash mob dance routine at a Salt Lake City, Utah Home Depot. The video, which featured 'Somebody Loves You', became a viral smash, and as of April 2014 had garnered over 11 million views.

Soon snapped up by major label RCA, she's now based in New York and crafting her debut album, previewing it with pop banger after pop banger. It's due out in October.

Who Does She Sound Like?

This is big, colourful day-glo pop, equal parts the best of 1980s electro and icy Scandinavian cuts. Think Robyn in her most direct moments, early 1990s Kylie Minogue and plenty of Gwen Stefani.

Why Should I Be Excited?

Because all her songs are catchier than the nastiest cold. That'll do right?

Can I Hear Something?

Her new single 'Heartbreak Dream' is below for you and you can check out her early EPs here in our digital store.
