hmv reviews… Brody Dalle @ London's Electric Ballroom

Ahead of the release of her debut solo album, Brody Dalle played to a packed out crowd in London's Electric Ballroom last night (April 24th) and we were there to review things.

Who?

Brody Dalle, former singer with The Distillers, now solo and about to release her solo debut record.

Where?

Camden Electric Ballroom, the grimy rock mecca in the heart of Camden.

Any good supports?

The Beaches, who were on top form. The Canadian foursome play this intoxicating mixture of riot girl punk and off-kilter 1970s psychedelia, with tracks that were as likely to end in frenzied guitar crescendos as they were to finish with weird keyboard wig-outs. It was incredible.

Was it full? And how were the crowd?

It was absolutely sold-out, with touts out in force outside Camden Town tube station. The crowd were pretty polite, but got more raucous as time went on.

So what was the set like? What did she play?

The set was split pretty evenly between material from her brand new solo record Diploid Love and tracks from her time with The Distillers. From her record, she smashed through the likes of 'Meet The Foetus/Oh The Joy', 'Underworld' and 'Rat Race', from her Distillers tracks, the likes of 'I Am a Revenant', 'Coral Fang' and a thunderous 'Die On A Rope'.

Any good between song banter?

She was quite quiet actually, there were a few 'It's great to see you London' and she asked the crowd, very politely, if they fancied a bit of a dance, but there were no lengthy speeches or stories.

Did she put on much of a show?

It was stripped down, raw and there were no theatrics on show, not even a backdrop, it would have just distracted from things to be honest…

What was the highlight of the set?

From her new stuff it was 'Don't Mess With Me', which absolutely slayed, from her earlier material, it was a ferocious rendition of 'Die On A Rope', which had the whole place going off.

Where can I catch her next?

She finishes her UK tour with a show in Sheffield tonight (April 25) and in Birmingham on Saturday (April 26). Then she'll be back for Reading Festival.

Brody Dalle's debut solo album Diploid Love is released on Monday (April 28th) and is available for pre-order in hmv stores now.
