hmv's Next Big Thing... #80 Conway the Machine

Every Wednesday we recommend a brand new artist who we think you're going to love. This week we're dragging you the proverbial dark alley with Conway the Machine...

Who is he?

Conway is one of a group of MCs and producers from Buffalo, NY on the Griselda Records imprint that have steadily been making a name for themselves on the East coast's underground rap scene over the last couple of years, along with others like Westside Gunn, who guests on several of Conway's tracks, and producer Daringer, who provides the beats on his debut album, Reject 2, released last year.

What does he sound like?

Think of all the glitzy, polished hip-hop that has come out of New York in the last decade or so – Jay Z, Diddy, even 50 Cent – this is the exact opposite of that. There's a decidedly retro, 90s feel about Daringer's dark, brooding production and Conway's lyrics are as brutal as they are clever, bringing to mind some of the more deep-down-and-dirty rap that emerged from the East coast in the early 90s like Boot Camp Clik, Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang Clan.

Why should I be excited?

The Griselda crew have been generating a solid buzz amongst their peers in recent months and are starting to gain attention from a wider audience, thanks in part to the patronage of established hip-hop legends like Gang Starr's DJ Premier. If you're a fan of some of the edgier hip-hop music that came out of New York 20 years ago and you've found yourself wondering why they don't make 'em like that any more, this might be the medicine you've been looking for.

Can I hear something?

You can check out a video for 'Blakk Tape', one of the tracks from Reject 2 below. Be warned though; much of Conway's lyrical content is probably NSFW and definitely not for the faint of heart or the easily offended. Consider yourselves advised...
