Madonna's Rebel Heart: What You Need To Know
Every Madonna album is an event, it’s the way she likes it, but the journey and recording of her new album Rebel Heart, which hits shelves on Monday (March 9th) has been more of a bumpy ride than usual. Here’s everything you need to know about Rebel Heart…
What’s the background?
After completing an exhaustive world tour in support of her 2012 album MDNA, Madonna spent most of 2014 putting together Rebel Heart, enlisting lots of top co-writers and producers (more details on that are below for you), it was put together slowly but surely, with the album in the can by the end of the year. Then, in December, disaster struck, the album leaked and was being passed around the web at a furious rate. Clearly upset, Madonna described the leak as “terrorism” and “artistic rap”, but, just a few hours later she responded very sensibly, five tracks were instantly made available online, teeing up anticipation for the rest of the album superbly…
Who’s producing it?
When you’re the most famous artist of the last 30 years, you can pretty much get any producer you want, and Madonna has. The roll call includes Avicii, Kanye West, Diplo, Ariel Rechtshaid and Ryan Tedder, who all feature on there. That’s a lot of big names..
Any special guests?
Of course, Nicki Minaj helps out on the wonderfully titled ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’, while Chance The Rapper and, bizarrely former heavyweight champion of the world Mike Tyson feature on ‘Iconic’.
What does it sound like?
Madonna likes to lurch from genre to genre, keeping up with current trends, but the club bangers and day-glo EDM that were all over MDNA are definitely a key part of Rebel Heart, particularly new single ‘Living For Love’. It’s actually quite a varied record, there are reggae influences, distilled dubstep beats and a couple of beefy ballads. She’s hedging her bets a little here, rather than going whole heartedly after one sound.
