My Record Collection by 99 Souls

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising stars 99 Souls, let's see what they've chosen...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

Jo: "This is John Coltrane - A Love Supreme. When I got it I hated it, now it's in my top 5 records ever! Coltrane is probably my favourite musician of all time."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

Soul: "Noughties soul-sampled hip hop is what really made me want to make beats so I've picked The Diplomats' 'I Really Mean It' as it epitomises my favourite label of the era, Roc-A-Fella Records."

Jo: "Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Incredible energy and performance. Sold from the first note to the vocal fading into oblivion at the end. It's easy to play for a guitarist, you can master it in about one week from never having played."

The record I've played more than any other is…

Jo: "Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry'. Incredibly personal lyric, beautiful musical arrangement and performances. Could listen to it from sun up to sun down."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

Soul: "I've gone for Damian Marley feat Bobby Brown - 'Beautiful' , makes me feel like I'm drinking a coconut somewhere in the Caribbean."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

Jo: "Radiohead - No Surprises'. I need music to come and meet me where I am when I'm down. This is a beautiful mysterious song."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

Soul: "I'm going to go for Isaac Hayes - (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right' because everyone loves Luther Ingram's version but most people don't seem to know Isaac's version which is incredible; the string & horn arrangements are out of this world..."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

Jo: "This is The Roots' Things Fall Apart. That's a gutsy photo to use as your cover art..."

The record with my favourite title is…

Jo: "'After the Gold Rush' by Neil Young. Evokes so much with just four words. And I love the record."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

Soul: "I guess we have to offend somebody! I really don't want to offend Pharrell 'cause he's a genius and I grew up on the Neptunes (and I don't want to offend TI 'cause he has an arsenal of military grade weapons) but I can't stand the bassline on 'Blurred Lines', makes me think of 'Agadoo'..."

The last record I bought was…

Soul: "It was actually the Crookers remix of "The Girl Is Mine" but other than that I think it was Matoma featuring Wale and Popcaan - 'Feeling Right (Everything Is Nice)'."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

Jo: "Definitely Kanye's new one."

The greatest record of all time is…

Jo: "'Stand By Me' by Ben E King. This is the reason that Edison popularised sound recording."

99 Souls' new single 'The Girl Is Mine' is out now and available to purchase here.
