My Record Collection by Amen Dunes

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Amen Dunes, a.k.a Damon McMahon, let's see what's in his collection...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"2 Live Crew – Nasty As They Wanna Be (censored version) Solid first choice for a 10 year old.  Mom was pretty pissed when she found it in my bag, even though it was the censored version.  Still had lots of big asses on the cover, which Moms are not into."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I never really wanted to be in a band for years, since I just wrote music on my own.  But way later on I would say it might have been Stone Roses' self-titled album.  I liked the idea of having a crew of dudes."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Most likely either Big Star – Sister Lovers or Love – Forever Changes.  Both taught me how to exist, both musically and in the world.  Got Forever Changes at 15 and discovered what musical understated darkness was all about, and Sister Lovers at 19/20 taught me about disregard."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Bob Dylan – Tree With Roots.  This is a collection of Basement Tapes outtakes.  Not much else out there has a thicker more carefree heavenly vibe than these recordings."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"A million different ones, but maybe Tim Buckley’s Happy Sad.  He was one of my first musical mentors, and got me through dark zones as a teenager."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"There are once again a million but I would say The La’s – The La’s.  Hands down the best record no one ever knows."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Beatles – White Album.  Pretty good idea on that one."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Dead C – Trapdoor Fucking Exit."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Not that I don’t understand why people like them, but I’ve never been able to care about Led Zeppelin…"

The last record I bought was…

"Robert Turman – Spirals of Everlasting Change. It's great."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2014 is…

"New Lust for Youth…"

The greatest record of all time is…

"Greatest is kind of a difficult word to wrap my head around, but maybe greatest, not necessarily my favorite, per se…I might say The Beatles – White Album."
