My Record Collection by Barry Hyde

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Barry Hyde, frontman with The Futureheads, who is about to unveil his debut solo album Malody, let's see what he chooses...

You can check out some of Barry's selections in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It’s hard to remember, my Dad had so many classics it was like having a music library in the house. Perhaps the XTC album Apple Venus in 1999."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"‘Sunshine of Your Love’ by Cream. I heard it whilst sitting in a faux american diner in monument mall in Newcastle and thought to myself ‘the only way I will ever get a girlfriend is if I learn how to play the riff’."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Another tricky one, probably Berlin by the late great master Lou Reed. A seriously deep, topically difficult album. Beware."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"‘Music is the Weapon of the Future’ by Fela Kuti. It’s fast pace, harmonically and rhythmically rich romp of premium quality Afro-beat. Get’s the blood pumping."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"When I’m down I can’t stand music because it all just sounds like noise that I can’t connect to. I remember when I had my heartbroken as an 18 year old though and my father gave me the three Nick Drake albums. Pink Moon got me through it."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Without a doubt Cut by The Slits. To me they are the true mavericks of the UK punk/post-punk/new-wave movement. A truly unique album that’s full of surprises and groundbreaking ideas. It’s totally liberated musical art."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Spotlight Kid by Captain Beefheart. He looks so weird it makes him impossibly cool."

The record with my favourite title is…

"The Marble Index by Nico. Such a perfectly titled album."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"#1 Record by Big Star. To me it’s nothing special. Ok it’s well crafted, has some good songs but it doesn’t move me."

The last record I bought was…

"Commontime by Field Music. It’s something else."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"Post Pop Depression by Iggy Pop."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Hmm. Not sure. Depends on genre. But my overriding feeling is that it’s Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin. But there are so many others."

Barry Hyde's debut solo album Malody is released on June 3rd. The album will be available to pre-order from hmv's online store in the coming days.
