My Record Collection by Basia Bulat

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of singer-songwriter Basia Bulat, let's see what she's picked out for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"I'll say The Beatles Anthology  - Volume 1. I was obsessed with the Beatles when I was in grade school. I used my babysitting money to buy this album on tape and I still have it and listen to it in my kitchen when I’m cooking."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This is No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom. I remember this ‘Just a Girl’ being a revelation to me as a kid. In high school I got to see No Doubt live at a tv station in Toronto and I was totally in awe of Gwen Stefani’s stage presence. Right after that show I started playing in all sorts of different bands, mostly as a bass player though!"

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Sam Cooke  - Live at Harlem Square Club. This is the best live record of all time, I promise."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"I'll say My Morning Jacket - Z. This record always gets me up dancing (and/or air guitar-ing) at home, on tour, on a road trip, at a party…"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I'll choose Nina Simone's Little Blue Girl. Nina’s voice is unlike anyone else’s on the planet before or since, and I have found it to be a source of joy and comfort all my life."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"This is David Bowie's Young Americans. I know a lot of people who feel the way I do about this album - yes the two big singles are incredible but the lyrics of this album all the way through are fantastic…and the backing vocals on ’win’ and ‘fascination’ get me every time. I find something new in this album every time I listen to it."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I'd say Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica. The cover is as bright and wild and inexplicable as the music within."

The record with my favourite title is…

"This is Joanna Newsom's Ys. When I first got this record the title was such a mystery and drew me in. I have such strong memories listening to this album and walking through deep snow one winter while I was still in university."

The last record I bought was…

"U.S. Girls - Half Free. This was my favourite album of 2015. The sound of the past and future happening at once…The dark truth sung in a sweet melody. Meg Remy’s voice is so compelling, I feel I’m living out the lives of her characters as she sings."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"Wider Smile - Confusion and Clarity. Wider Smile are the weirdest pop band in Montreal and I’ve heard they’re now expanding their horizons and putting out a self help tape later this year… I can’t wait to hear what kind of cosmic musical advice they offer."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. I don’t know if a single empirically “greatest record of all time” can exist, but I feel lucky to have been a teenager when this record came out and for it to have had such an impact on me… And on top of it being meaningful to me personally, it’s a masterpiece."

Basia Bulat's new album Good Advice will be released on February 12th and is available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page.
