My Record Collection by Black Stone Cherry's John Fred Young

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Black Stone Cherry sticksman John Fred Young, let's see what's in his record collection...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' and it was on tape!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"There are so many great albums that influenced me, I could never pick just one! Led Zeppelin are my favourite band of all time and all their records were hugely influential to me. Listening to John Bonham's drumbeats on 'Immigrant Song' made me beat the plaster off my chimney as a kid."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"As a kid, I played AC/DC's 'Back in Black' over and over. Phil Rudd could play for 5 minutes before he hit a crash cymbal and all the while his cigarette never lost an ash. Now that's rock n' roll!"

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Jeff Lynne's 'Armchair Theatre'. My Dad (John-Fred's dad is Kentucky Headhunters' frontman Richard Young) introduced me to this amazing record when I was 12. It still remains one of my favourites."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Anything upbeat usually gets rid of the blues, but I like the blues! Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Albert King. You can't have a full understanding and appreciation of rock n' roll without the blues. If I'm down, I want to listen to something that is going to make me feel like I'm on the beach."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"There's too many to count. Leon Russell, The Kentucky Headhunters, The Band...there's way too many artists to list who have out and out amazing records that never get the critical acclaim or recognition they deserve."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Cream's 'Disraeli Gears'. This album's artwork hangs in our practice house and is always an eye catcher. The colours are so vibrant and psychedelic."

The record with my favourite title is…

"'Panty Raid' by Doug Clarke & the Hot Nuts. This record also hangs in our practice house and it always seems to get people laughing."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Everybody has their own taste and there are bands I don't listen to, but I always try to find some thing cool in everything. I'm not a big fan of 80's extreme hair metal, but some people dig it and that's cool."

The last record I bought was…

"'Mezzanine' by Massive Attack. Joe Barresi, our producer on the last album introduced us to this group. They actually inspired us to go back and add a very cool break down on the song, 'Dance Girl'."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2014 is…

"'Magic Mountain' of course."

The greatest record of all time is…

"That's impossible to answer! There are so many incredible albums out there, like The Beatles White album, Led Zeppelin's 'Houses of the Holy', Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid', Aerosmith's 'Toys in the Attic'....There's too many!"

Black Stone Cherry's new album Magic Mountain will be released on May 5th, but you can grab their new single 'Me And Mary Jane' and check out their back catalogue in our download store now here.
