My Record Collection by Brett Dennen

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Brett Dennen, he does love a bit of Paul Simon...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Beach Boys - Greatest Hits. I was really 7 or 8. Sloop John B made me cry."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Green Day - Dookie. The songs were easy to learn. I knew how to play all of them."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Paul Simon - Graceland. Best record I've ever heard. Pure mastery."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Paul Simon - Graceland. The sounds are uplifting and the grooves are so easy feeling. Nothing is rushed or urgent."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Graham Nash - Songs for Beginners. It's raw and humble. I love the honesty and simplicity. He has the most sincere voice ever."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Van Morrison  - Veedon Fleece. It might have been released with great reviews, but I never hear people talk about it. It's my favorite of his."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Eagles - Desperado. Especially the inside and back. Wild West gunfight."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Mumford and Sons. The latest one."

The last record I bought was…

"JD Souther -  Black Rose. Another underrated album. He wrote a lot of great Eagles tunes."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"Blind Pilot. Don't know what they are going to call it but they should be releasing something soon."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Paul Simon - Graceland. I'm sure you could have guessed that..."

Brett Dennen's new album Smoke and Mirrors is out now and can be previewed on the right hand side of the page.
