My Record Collection by Chesney Hawkes

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week it's the turn of Chesney Hakes, he of 'I Am The One And Only' fame, let's see what he picks...

Check out a selection of Chesney's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Prince and the Revolution's Purple Rain. In those days it was vinyl I still have this record remember bringing it home and putting sellotape around all the edges to protect it!"

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"The Beatles' White Album. To be fair every Beatles album made me want to be in a band but this one in particular really showed the three songwriters as the geniuses they are."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"The Beatles - Sgt Pepper. This Beatles record is now my kids favourite and lives permanently in the CD player of my car. 'When I'm 64' is their all-time favourite."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"This is Van Morrison - Bright Side Of The Road. This is hands down the most uplifting song ever!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Crowded House's Woodface. I've lost count of the amount of times I have bought this record! Vinyl, CD, cassette and I even downloaded it on MP3. It just feels like home."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"World Party's Goodbye Jumbo. When I was signed to Chrysalis Records in the early 1990s, my A&R man gave me a free copy of this album. Karl Wallinger should be a National Treasure as far as I am concerned. One of the greatest albums ever made and one of the most underrated bands Britain has ever produced."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Beatles - Sgt Pepper. I know it's obvious choice but I can't think of a better than this one. It has it all..."

The record with my favourite title is…

"David Bowie's Hunky Dory. Great title Medusa, a belter of an album."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

"Anything by Neil Young. I just don't get it!"

The last record I bought was…

"Ed Sheeran's ÷. Love a bit of Ed!"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is..

"Anything from Prince's vault. Rumours that prints made at least 25 albums that he never released and his family are planning to release them all piece by piece period so very excited about this!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"Prince - Sign O The Times. It is extraordinary eclectic. This was Prince at the very height of his genius."

Chesney Hawkes plays the Let’s Rock! London Festival on Clapham Common on July 15th.
