My Record Collection by Clara Amfo

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of BBC Radio 1's Clara Amfo, let's see what she's chosen for us...

(You can listen to a selection of tracks from Clara's picks in this playlist).

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"One of the first tunes that I remember having enough pocket money to buy myself was 'Digging On You' by TLC. I love R&B music from that era and TLC are so fun and have great tunes,The Supremes in baggy trousers and crop tops! I still have the CD at home in a shoe box, I can never throw it away."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Like an idiot, I gave up the piano when I was younger, I really wish I stuck with it! My big brother Andy was really in to Jamiroquai so I grew up hearing all their tunes through him, I would love to play bass like Stuart Zender 'Alright' is sublime. I'm biased but I would happily join The Internet too, they are big Zender fans as well. 'Girl' by them is another winner."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"At this point in time, it's Beyonce's 'Formation'. I love to play it when DJing and if I'm not the one playing, I become THAT screechy girl when it comes on in the club."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"'Do I Do' by Stevie Wonder, I don't trust people who don't like him!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I like my feelings and music to meet at the same place, so rather than listen to a happy song, I tend to wallow with sad music. 'Glory Box' by Portishead is always a good one for wallowing and it's resurrection through Alessia Cara's 'Here' was very good, the perfect anti-social anthem."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Janelle Monae's 'Cold War' is just this amazing battle cry. The beat is so clever, it's as if Outkast and The Doors had a baby. She's such a vital artist. Cheekily, I'll also add 'Tightrope' by her it's like a prequel to Pharrell's 'Happy' and should have been an international hit."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, it's one of the first albums I purchased and looking at it makes me feel at home. I know that album back to front, front to back. It's a certified classic for me."

The record with my favourite title is…

"'Spottieottiedopaliscious' by Outkast."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"'Moves Like Jagger'. It makes me feel like I'm at a bad wedding reception."

The last record I bought was…

"David Bowie's death definitely made me go back and obsessively listen to my favourite singles of his, as well as take some time with his classic albums, so I bought 'Young Americans'. His ability to effortlessly hop between genres was incredible."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"Frank Ocean! Frank Ocean! Frank Ocean!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"Anything by Michael Jackson! I watched the Bad 25 documentary and was blown away by his obsessive attention to detail and need to be his absolute best. His work with Quincy Jones was magical and 'Liberian Girl' is a great example of that . From those beautiful whispers at the start and the Mbira throughout, it's perfect."

Clara Amfo will be bringing her club night ABOUT to London's XOYO on Wednesday (March 9th) with special guests The Internet's Syd tha Kid and Matt Martians. Click here for more details.
