My Record Collection by Dan Croll

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week it's the turn of shimmery electro maestro Dan Croll, let's see what he chooses...

Check out a selection of Dan's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This was Wheatus - 'Teenage Dirtbag', on cassette from Woolworths (R.I.P) on a school trip to the Jorvik centre."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Sum 41 - All Killer No Filler. One of pop punk's finest bands and albums. as soon as I heard it, I knew I wanted to be in a band, just to impress all the girls in the music room on our lunch breaks."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"This would be Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan, It's just back to back killer songs that I play way too often."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Let's say Toe - The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety, I love this album so much, most of all for the fact that its purely instrumental yet has the power to conjure up all kinds of imagery in my head. Super dynamic, intricate, and sonically positive."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I'd say Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear, This whole album from its lyrics, sound, and delivery is emotionally raw. I usually put it on in the car, drive around and sing really loudly along to it.

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is..."

"This is Athlete - Vehicles and Animals, This is a really nostalgic album for me, and never felt like the album nor the band got the praise they deserved."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I'd say Supertramp - Breakfast in America, Every time I'm heading stateside this seems to be the image that comes to mind before I jump on the plane. It just makes me chuckle, the idea I’m heading over there to play music yet all I can think about is all the horrible greasy fast food I want to eat. It's quite a humorous yet dark image to have as an album cover."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I'd chose Electric Wizard - Dopethrone, An album title that I feel really suits the royalty of stoner rock/doom."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"This is Ed Sheeran - Divide, Seems like a pretty funny dude, but I just can’t hear it."

The last record I bought was…

"Ths would be Ryuichi Sakamoto - Thousand Knives, I ended up having a Yellow Magic Orchestra binge which then led me down the Ryuichi Sakamoto rabbit hole. The opening track to this album is just amazing, such intricate feel good sounds everywhere that make you bounce."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"Really looking forward to Sylvan Esso's new album, the singles so far have been amazing."

The greatest record of all time is…

"The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, because it is."

Dan Croll's new album Emerging Adulthood is released in July and available to pre-order now on the right-hand side of the page.
