My Record Collection by Dan Mangan

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Dan Mangan, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Oh man. It was Aerosmith’s Get A Grip on CD. I was maybe 9? I thought I was so bad ass. Back of the car, massive headphones that I borrowed from my brother. The idea that I could focus inward and JUST listen to an album on headphones was such a crucial thing for me as a kid."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I was 14 when OK Computer came out. There was probably a good six month span where nearly every day, I’d come home from highschool, blast OK Computer on repeat and play "Command & Conquer: Red Alert" on PC. Obviously, I was very attractive to girls."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Not that I need to turn this into a Radiohead fiesta, but even though OK Computer and Kid A were crucial to my musical headspace, in recent years I find myself turning to In Rainbows more often. They’re all basically perfect albums, but In Rainbows has a subtlety that lends itself to any situation. Never gets old."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Recently, Father John Misty’s Fear Fun has been a go-to. I love the humour, but also the musicianship and Josh’s voice. It’s able to throw-back and be current at the same time."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"If you really want to wallow in your melancholy, Bry Webb’s Provider hits the mark."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"A few come to mind in recent years. I don’t know about allll timmmmeeee… Young People’s Church Of The Air by Deleted Scenes, Provider by Bry Webb, Strange Negotiations by David Bazan, The Nature Of Things by The Daredevil Christopher Wright, Small Reveal by Aidan Knight."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Well my pal Dan Hiller’s artwork is on the cover of the Royal Blood self-titled album. It’s great. I’m sitting beneath one of his prints in my dining room right now."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I’ve always enjoyed the Modest Mouse title Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Our pal Astral Swans is about to put out an album on my little label called All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. I’m sorry. There, I said it. I understand the grooves are heavy, but some of the lyrics are so awful, I can’t get past them. I get that it’s dance music. Maybe I need to give it more spins or something.."

The last record I bought was…

"Picked up the St. Vincent / David Byrne LP recently. Admittedly, haven’t listened yet."

The records I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"New Viet Cong should be great.. Matana Roberts, Father John Misty.."

The greatest record of all time is…

"You assholes...."
