My Record Collection by David Gray

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of David Gray, a singer-songwriter who needs no introduction. Let's see what's in his collection...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

“It was 'I don't like Mondays' by the Boomtown Rats.”

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

“That would be 'Absolutely' by Madness.”

The record I've played more than any other is…

“Is 'Astral weeks' by Van Morrison.”

The record that always make me feel good is…

“Currently......a beautiful song by Cass McCombs called 'County Line'.”

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

“Toss up between 'Inner City Blues' by Marvin Gaye and the old Impulse album 'Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane'.”

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

“So many seem to fall through the net so plenty to choose from, I’ll go with 'Container' by Lacklustre.”

The record with my favourite cover art is…

“Jimi Hendrix’s 'Electric Ladyland' battles it out with Pink Floyd’s 'Wish You Were Here'.... And wins! First round KO!!”

The record with my favourite title is…

“'Hell bent on compromise' by Edwyn Collins. Subsequently a favourite phrase of mine.”

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

“I must admit to never having really clicked with anything that Muse have done, but hey, an opinion's like an arse, everyone's got one.”

The last record I bought was…

“Just downloaded 'Geisterfahrer' by John Matthias and Spatia' by Ukkonnen at the airport. Am about to give them both a spin....”

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2014 is…

“See above.”

The greatest record of all time is…

“Enough already with the bloody list making! There's no such thing.”

David Gray's new album Mutineers will be released on June 30th and is available for pre-order in hmv stores now and from our digital store.
