My Record Collection by Destruction's Schmier

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of German thrash trio Destruction and their singer Schmier, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Status Quo's Live!. I found my first favourite band. It was a game changer for me."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This was Motörhead's ‘Ace Of Spades’. Those guys looked so bad ass and shocked my parents at the same time. We got inspired by that look with DESTRUCTION a bit later on...you maybe can tell!"

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Kill ‘Em All by Metallica was for sure an album I could not get enough of. It was so different, so much more heavy and fast and so intense. It is still my number one album by the band."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti. It has so many funny lyrics and crazy songs - it makes me happy immediately!"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Candlemass are the kings of doom from Sweden. Their Nightfall record has epic songs and Messiah’s voice is soothing and powerful. Amazing vibes on this one!"

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"There are so many. In my humble opinion, some of the new wave of British heavy metal pearls deserve more success. MORE’s ‘Warhead’ is most underrated I think - their singer Paul Mario Day was a good as Ronnie Dio."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Judas Priest's Unleashed In The East. It was the start of heavy metal and Priest’s first live album, recorded in Tokyo."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Headhunter's A Bizarre Gardening Accident’. And of course, this is also a quote from the genius Spinal Tap. When the band were asked what happened to their first drummer, David St. Hubbins replies, “He died in a bizarre gardening accident”."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"There are too many! The taste of the masses was never the best. An album that really disappointed me when I was a young metalhead was Black Sabbath's Born Again. I don’t think Ian Gillan was the best fit for them."

The last record I bought was…

"This is Dead Kennedy's Fresh Fruits For Rotting Vegetables. I only own the album on vinyl. We needed it to learn the song ‘Holiday in Cambodia’ that we covered as a bonus track on our forthcoming album Thrash Anthems II. One of my favourite punk acts of all times!"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"The new Judas Priest record. It’s being produced by the legendary Andy Sneap - that will be very exciting to hear! Or is it coming 2018? Never mind, I can't wait to hear it."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Has to be Unleashed In The East by Judas Priest - it made me a metalhead and changed my life forever!"

Destruction's new album Thrash Anthems II is out on Friday (November 10th) and is available to pre-order here.
