My Record Collection by Devin Townsend

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of eccentric metal icon Devin Townsend, he goes from Star Wars to the Dayglo Abortions...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The soundtrack to Star Wars, on Vinyl. I loved the interplay between heroic and sinister. To this day I'm influenced by soundtracks as many veer into avant-garde territory without the audience being offended."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Unleashed In The East - Judas Priest. KK Downing was my favourite player. Atonal, wild, and covered in delay. 'Victim Of Changes' painted such images in my head."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Rapoon - Darker By Light. First got it about 12 years ago, and for some reason, it just became my go to album for background ambience. Really creates a dark mood without being hostile."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons. First picked it up on recommendation from someone in Australia, and it has a very sunny, cheery disposition."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Sessions. Though typically, when I'm down I usually dont listen to music, but this album paints melancholy in a good way."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Cop Shoot Cop - White Noise. Lyrically just so satisfying. THis album is one that I've had a few moments of 'how can this be so good?' I think they were great songwriters."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Mezzanine - Massive Attack. Besides the fact that this band is one of my favourites overall, this cover springs to mind for artwork, though typically I'm not too fussed about album art."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Dayglo Abortions: Feed Us a Fetus. Because...I dont know, syntax? They were from Victoria BC and we grew up with them playing everywhere in BC. Funny name, cool band."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Anything by Dane Cook. It must be just me. I've watched and listened to whole specials and albums by him with people all around me whooping and gasping for air and I didn't even crack a smile. I must be missing something."

The last record I bought was…

"Godflesh - A World Lit Only By Fire. Love Godflesh, love Jesu. Great to hear that bass again."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"None that I'm aware of. I'm a bit out of touch right now. While I'm working, I generally just put on the radio on a chill out channel. Usually things related to work stress me out when I'm focusing, and right now I'm happily oblivious."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Ravi Shankar and George Harrison - Songs Of India. For the song 'Prabhujee' alone, this is the greatest album ever in my opinion."

Devin Townsend's new album  is out now and can be previewed on the right hand side of the page.
