My Record Collection by Fanfarlo's Simon Balthazar

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Fanfarlo's Simon Balthazar, let's find out what he likes and dislikes...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was possibly Nirvana's Nevermind. But Stereolab's Emperor Tomato Ketchup wasn't too far behind for sure."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Who knows? But the first cover I ever played with a band was '21st Century Schizoid Man' by King Crimson, in music class, badly, when I was 16. It was a bit misguided, I mean you need the chops for that."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"According to my compuiter it is ESG's 'A South Bronx Story'. I can see Left Handed Dream (Ryuichi Sakamoto out of YMO) is a contender as of late though."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Suicide's self-titled debut album."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Surf's Up by Beach Boys. Although really should be LOW by David Bowie right?"

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Impossible question. But two records by Chrisma – Hybernation and Chinese Restaurant – are both good and underrated!"

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Hypgnosis (English art design group) made a few real crackers. Ok, so a real obvious one is Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, but it is a great cover. Can't say it's my favourite record though."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen by The Residents."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Visions by Grimes."

The last record I bought was…

"Magic Fly by Space."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2014 is…

"I have absolutely no idea. Sorry."

The greatest record of all time is…

"The classics are the classics, and there's a lot of them, so I'll leave it to Rolling Stone to try to decide what's #1 and what's #71. But a much treasured record for me is Aguirre by Popol Vuh."

Fanfarlo's new album Let's Go Extinct is released on Monday (February 10).
