My Record Collection by Funeral For A Friend's Matt Davies-Kreye

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Funeral For A Friend frontman Matt Davies-Kreye and his collection of classic emo and hardcore punk...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Bad Religion - Generator, I got it on cassette. I was 12, almost 13 years old. Up until then it was mostly mix tapes from friends and getting my dad to buy pretty cool 7” records from Woolworths throughout the 80’s."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I taught myself guitar to Eagles and Beatles songs so at first it was probably either one of those bands. But in a more serious sense, probably Bad Religion or Pennywise."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Weezer’s Blue album. My younger brother bought it for me on cassette when our Uncle took him to Cardiff to buy something from Forbidden Planet. I asked him if he could pick me up Buddy Holly as a single and he came back with the album. I’ve owned it in many formats over the years, special editions, CD, vinyl etc. But I’m pretty sure it’s my most played record and it never gets boring. I think I know all the words to all the songs too."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Jersey’s Best Dancers by Lifetime. It’s an inspiring record and it wears it’s heart on it’s sleeve and I just love Ari’s vocals…they’re always on the edge of breaking but they’re so confessional. I love it so much."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"That’s easy. Bane’s It All Comes Down To This. I don’t mind wallowing from time to time but to kick myself out of it I get stuck into this record. It’s ferocious, beautiful and always strikes a chord with me and lifts my spirits. Bane have always been good at helping me get back on my feet."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"That’s easy too. Handsome’s self titled album. They only ever made one record and it’s one of the finest slices of post-hardcore you’re ever likely to hear. They had members of Helmet, Quicksand and Cro-Mags and it amazed me that the album didn’t really gain any attention until years later. It’s just been issued on vinyl for the first time via 6131 Records and SRC Vinyl…needless to say, I have both pressings."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"That would be Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate. I remember falling in love with it when I bought the record and feeling this lonely connection with it."

The record with my favourite title is…

"That would be Drowningman’s Rock and Roll Killing Machine not for the album title but the fact that one of the songs on the album is called ‘If God Loves A Winner He’s Going To Want To Fuck Me In A Minute’….that’s pretty hard to beat."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Not sure. Can’t say I ever think of records that other people like. I have no problem with people listening to whatever."

The last record I bought was…

"Boysetsfire 'The Misery Index' vinyl reissue on Bridge Nine records. When it first came out it never got pressed on vinyl so I’m stoked that End Hits Records and Bridge Nine were able to make this happen."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"Although I’ve heard it streaming already, I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the new Turnstile record…"

The greatest record of all time is…

"Easy. Pinkerton by Weezer."
