My Record Collection by GUN's Dante Gizzi

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Scottish rock veterans GUN and their singer Dante Gizzi. Let's dive in...

Check out a selection of Dante's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"It was Rockn'Roll Outlaw by Rose Tattoo. Came across it at the Barrowlands Market at an old vinyl stall. Don't know what possessed me to buy it. I think it may have been the cover that attracted me initially but when I got home and put it on I thought wow this is amazing. The riff and the vocals were just incredible."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"1999 by Prince. Remember seeing his performance on Top Of The Pops and it just completely blew me away. I had never seen anyone so charismatic and cool like this before. I recorded the show on my VHS player and used to come home from school every day at lunchtime and watch it."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads. It's just an amazing song to listen to and I never get bored of it. Even when I put it on now it has a timeless feel like as though it could have been recorded yesterday., Also the live version of it on the Stop Making Sense film is just beautifully outlandish."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"This is Barry White's You're The First My Last My Everything. As soon as I hear the intro of this it instantly puts a smile on my face. The mood it sets from the off you just want to dance and the strings throughout are so iconic especially at the break section. It just flows effortlessly."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Cloudbusting by Kate Bush. This is a song that definitely lifts me when I'm feeling a bit low. The pulsing rhythmic drums are amazing as is Kate's eerily stunning vocals."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"This would be The Tubes' Backward Completion Principle. This album's got everything, stunning melodies grooves lyrics etc. I've always thought it's a record that not a lot of people know about. Growing up I just couldn't get enough of it. Each song has a certain individuality which I absolutely love."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Velvet Underground And Nico. This is an absolutely stunning album and I remember seeing the CD version in hmv back in the early 90s. I was so engrossed in the artwork as I really loved Warhol's style of art. I remember thinking it was quite expensive at the time as it had the peel back banana concept. Luckily I still have it today and the banana remains untouched."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman. Since his passing, I've began to reminisce and listen to his back catalogue. I feel this song is just way ahead of its time."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"I'm sorry to say but anything by Ed Sheeran. I know it's a big call and millions of people would disagree with me and I understand that. I've tried really hard to find the attraction but I just don't get it. It's probably an age thing."

The last record I bought was…

"It was Two Door Cinema Club's Gameshow. Got the album on the strength of 'Are We Ready?(Wreck)', which is just a wonderful track that I've had on repeat for a while now."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"Queens Of The Stone Age's Villains. Really digging the new single at the moment, The Evil Has Landed, great vintage guitar sound and riff city. If that's anything to go by I'll definitely be getting the new album."

The greatest record of all time is…

"It's Prince's Purple Rain. Very difficult to say but if I had to choose it would have to be this one. There aren't many albums out there in my view that has so many incredible songs. I would die 4 U Let's go crazy When doves cry not to mention one of the best ballads of all time, Purple Rain. Simply outstanding."

GUN's new album Favourite Pleasures is out on September 15th and available to pre-order here in hmv's online store.
