My Record Collection by Happyness's Benji Compston

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Happyness's Benji Compston, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"That would be By The Way by Red Hot Chili Peppers."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"It’s A Wonderful Life’ by Sparklehorse. I was played this record for the first time by Ed Harcourt just before we started making our first album and it just signalled in a whole new thing I think."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. I went through a phase of exclusively listening to this record wherever I went. Billy Corgan guitar lines are very sing-able in the shower."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Summerteeth by Wilco. I borrowed Jonny’s dad’s copy of this record one summer when I was doing a lot of driving between a job I had in a restaurant and our studio. It’s a good windows open kind of record."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Undercurrent by Jim Hall and Bill Evans. It’s kinda light hearted and playful, which is nice for it to be."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"That would be Suburban Lake by Club Gaga."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Carnival of Souls by Pere Ubu. You could spend a lifetime answering all the questions in the eyes of that monkey-lion-soul-creature."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Divorce Pop by Son of Stan. Watch the video for ‘Noxeema’ off this record, it runs with the title in a cool way."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"An Awesome Wave’ by Alt-J. Everything I’ve heard from it feels kind of cold and heartless, it seems overworked to death to me. Good on them though for doing so well."

The last record I bought was…

"‘More Than Any Other Day by Ought. I saw them live at Scala a few months back and I bought the record there."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"‘Strangers to Ourselves by Modest Mouse. Can't wait."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Blonde on Blonde’ by Bob Dylan. No doubt."

Happyness's debut album A Whole New Shape is released on March 30th.
