My Record Collection by Hardwell

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's Dutch DJ Hardwell, let's see what he chooses...

You can check out some of Ed's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This was System F – ‘Out of the Blue’. It’s an absolute trance classic and put Ferry’s name on the map as a producer. It was a hit in Holland and I think it was a Top 20 hit in the UK too."

The record that made me want to be a DJ was…

"Tiësto - ‘Suburban Train’. From the minute I heard it I wanted to be able to make records like this and play them out to big crowds. It was such an inspiring record for me and sounds as fresh today as it ever has."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Probably my own ‘Spaceman’. It’s one of the biggest records I’ve ever made and a massive fan favourite. I love sneaking it into my sets and surprising the record with new edits and remixes of it. Always gets the crowd into a frenzy!"

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Robin S – ‘Show Me Love’. An instant feel good record and one that never fails to get you dancing. There are numerous mixes of this classic out there. Including my own, which was the first record I did that grabbed a lot of attention for me with DJ’s worldwide when I was starting out in my career."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Pharrell Williams – ‘Happy’. Pharrell managed to produce a record that just beams with positive energy. There’s nothing serious about it, it’s just a straight up fun and joyful record."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"This is Eminem's ‘Criminal’. A controversial Eminem record and that’s saying something by his standards but it’s a lyric that he uses to explain he’s just out to wind people up and not everything he says should be taken so literally. It’s got a great groove and definitely one of the best rap spits Eminem has done."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"This is The Prodigy - Music For The Jilted Generation. A musical masterpiece which features one of the most memorable album front covers of any electronic dance music album out there. The Prodigy are one of my favourite dance acts of all time and this album is right up there are one of my favourites too. The album’s inlay artwork is equally iconic and edgy."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Tiësto & Hardwell – Zero 76. Picking one of my own for this but getting a chance to work with a DJ who was a big inspiration to me growing up and somebody who also grew up in my hometown of Breda was a huge moment for me. We made this track in our hometown of Breda so wanted to give it a title that connected it to the city, but without just calling it Breda. So we went for ‘Zero 76’ which is the prefix number when dialling in to call Breda."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Psy - Gangnam Style. I can see it’s just a bit of fun but I’m still blown away how big this record became. It seemed to just keep on growing and growing. Just goes to show how a trend can take over the entire world."

The last record I bought was…

"Coldplay – ‘A Head Full of Dreams’. But it wasn’t for me, it was a family member as a gift. They loved the Coldplay remix (A Sky Full Of Stars) I did last year so much, I thought it would be cool to get them the new album."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"Avicii’s new album. With 2016 being the last year we’ll see Avicii touring I’m hoping he manages to close this year with a new album. I am sure I’m not alone in wanting to see more music from this great producer."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Californication’. Ok, I’ll admit it’s probably not to most but for me it just oozes so much energy. I really love this one."

Hardwell plays Creamfields this weekend (August 26th - 28th).
