My Record Collection by Jamie Lawson

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of rising star Jamie Lawson, let's see what he picks...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was...

"Michael Jackson - 'Bad', still f***ing brilliant (apart from 'Speed Demon', that song's rubbish)."

The record that made me want to be in a band was...

"R.E.M. - 'Out Of Time'. I think like a lot of people this was my way in to R.E.M., because of 'Losing My Religion'. I then discovered they'd had six albums before this and all of them were great. I was spoilt. They're probably my favourite band - the band I think of when I'm stuck songwriting... 'What would R.E.M. do?'"

The record I've played more than any other is...

"Ron Sexsmith - 'Other Songs'. Songwriting perfection. It just doesn't get any better."

The record that always make me feel good is...

"Van Morrison - 'Moondance'. Such a sense of space and openness, so free and soulful. It's a room you can walk straight into and feel right at home. This was the main reference for my album, this was my aim. I'm sure I missed by miles, but my aim was true."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is...

"Patty Griffin - 'Impossible Dream'. Such a beautiful heartfelt record. Delicate and personal. It opens you right up and connects straight to the core of you."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is...

"Mark Eitzel - '60 Watt Silver Lining'. Mark Eitzel is my hero. His music, both solo and as part of American Music Club, had a huge effect on my performance and songwriting. It won't be too apparent on this record but you can definitely hear his influence all over my first record 'Last Night Stars'. Such a great writer. '60 Watt...' is a stunning record. I urge you all to go get it, if you like your music beautiful and yearning that is. (Some will say depressing. They are wrong)."

The record with my favourite cover art is...

"Sunny Day Real Estate - 'Diary'. So cool. Great band. Great record."

The record with my favourite title is...

"Mark Eitzel - 'Caught In A Trap And I Can't Get Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much Baby'. How cool is that?! Also massively underrated as it goes. The title comes from the Elvis song 'Suspicious Minds', it's also a Haiku. Very cool."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

"This question is weird. I can understand why someone would like any record, they connect to it. What other reason is there?"

The last record I bought was...

"The Maccabees - 'Marks To Prove It'. I saw them do an acoustic performance recently and thought they were great. I think this album is a real progression for them. It's deeper and more personal, braver in a way."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is...

"The only record I know that's coming out is mine... so that one."

The greatest record of all time is...

"Jeff Buckley - 'Grace'. It's very hard to surpass this record in terms of production and performance for its beauty. I didn't really know the voice could do those things until I heard Jeff Buckley sing. I was pretty upset when he died, such a massive loss. Imagine what he'd be doing now."

Jamie Lawson's self-titled debut album is out on October 9th and available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page.
