My Record Collection by Lisa Hannigan

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Irish songstress Lisa Hannigan, let's see what she picks...

You can check out some of Lisa's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This would be Bad by Michael Jackson. I got this on tape when it first came out and wore it out from playing. I would alternate between poring over the lyrics and dancing about."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I'd say Kristin Hersh's Hips and Makers. I became completely obsessed with this record as a teenager. It’s so personal and exposed and beautiful."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"I'd probably say Paul Simon’s Graceland as I’ve been listening to it since childhood and it has never felt dated or unsuitable."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Graceland again. I just don’t think you can be in a bad mood listening to this record. One of the greatest."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"The Rachel’s Songs of Egon Schiele. This is such a beautiful, atmospheric album. It doesn’t jar with feeling down but doesn’t try and cheer you up either."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I love Joni Mitchell’s Ladies of the Canyon, though Blue is her most often lauded, this record is the one for me. It's so beautiful and intriguing."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I'd choose Patti Smith Horses. This is sort of obvious but I just love the simplicity and strength of this cover."

The record with my favourite title is…

"I’ve always really like Our Endless Numbered Days by Iron and Wine. A title that feels beautiful and slightly sinister at the same time."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Hey, who am I to judge! I very nearly put Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbuster's theme tune as my favourite song of all time..."

The last record I bought was…

"Little Scream’s Cult Following. (I must confess that I was given this!) I am so in love with Laurel’s music. This such a great record, so dense and fun."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"I haven’t heard the new Blood Orange record yet which I’m looking forward to."

The greatest record of all time is…

"I think that’s the best thing about music, that there’s a greatest record for each moment and situation. One would never be enoug, unless it’s Ghostbusters..."
