My Record Collection by Mark Morriss

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of former Bluetones' frontman Mark Morriss, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Moonlight Shadow - Mike Oldfield. Featuring the best guitar solo of 1983. No contest."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I'd pick The Stone Roses- The Stone Roses. Not just this record, but seeing them play at the time. The energy and charisma they had back then completely swept me away. I formed my first band that week."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Love- Forever Changes. It just hasn’t aged. If anything, in these troubled, manufactured, homogenised times it sounds fresher and freer than ever."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"I Want Your Love - Chic. Hips, don’t fail me now…"

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Scott 3 - Scott Walker. This is melancholy in a bottle. Dripping with sadness and ennui. This is the album that the chaise longue would’ve been invented for, had it not already been invented."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Terence Trent D’Arby - Neither Fish Nor Flesh. Listen to it… just listen to it. It’s excellent. Sure, it’s a bit of a slow burner but when it gets going it don’t stop. He showed flashes of genius on this record, and that isn’t a word I bandy about lightly. Flashes."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Duran Duran - Rio. I could’ve said Scott 3 again for this ‘un, but I can’t think of an album cover that so perfectly packages the sounds therein. Slick, refined, a bit dead behind the eyes but totally irresistible. Just like me."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Caravan - If I Could Do It All Over Again, I’d Do It All Over You. I’ve never heard it. I might give it a listen. with some Wet Ones to hand."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Ed Sheeran. Anything by…"

The last record I bought was…

"Tame Impala - Currents. Haven’t got my head completely around it yet, but I’m enjoying the process. He’s a clever bugger, this fella."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"The New Matt Berry album. Kill The Wolf was a brilliant record that caught quite a few people off guard. It’s going to be interesting to see what he serves up now that expectations have been cranked up a notch or two."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Released by Acid Jazz on July 31st. It’s called The Taste Of Mark Morriss. I can’t stop listening to it. And neither will you."

Mark Morriss's new album The Taste Of Mark Morriss is released on Friday (July 31st). You can pre-order it here.
