My Record Collection by Part Chimp's Tim Cedars

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week it's the turn of Part Chimp's Tim Cedars, let's see what he produces...

Check out a selection of Tim's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money...

"I think it was Whitesnake - Saints and Sinners. Definitely the first gig I went to. I think I liked their logo best. I bought a patch. I remember John Lord and Cozy Powell being really amazing… or it might have been Visage - Fade To Grey."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This would be Smash Hits by Jimi Hendrix Experience mainly because I wanted to be Mitch Mitchell."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"I think this was maybe Velvet Underground - White Light White Heat. It's definitely the most knackered looking in my collection. It made me realise noise was good."

The record that makes me feel good is...

"Kris Kristofferson - The Silver Tongued Devil. It's the only song I know all the words to so I can sing along drunkenly."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"This would be King Kong - Funny Farm. Uncomplicated and upbeat.  It usually cheers me up if I need it to. Also good for happy times and dancing stupidly to."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Yerself Is Steam by Mercury Rev. I don't know if it's underrated or not but I think maybe the first two albums might get overlooked. Quite a different band to what they became after David Baker left. He was properly nuts and it complemented the music perfectly."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I'd say Satan Is Real by the Louvin Brothers. There's a note on the back which explains how Charlie and Ira built the scene and almost caught on fire themselves while shooting it."

The record with my favourite title is…

"This would have to be Butthole Surfers wonderfully named Hairway to Steven."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Too many to mention. Each to their own I guess. I'm sure most people would struggle to understand some of the music I love. I don't understand why I love some of the music I love."

The last record I bought was…

"Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson. A ridiculously good record. The recording is amazing. Totally insane band with a lush orchestra and Serge."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"I think Bardo Pond have a new record coming out. I look forward to wading in that dreamy swamp again."

The greatest record of all is...

"Too many! The Stooges by The Stooges. I thought 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' was the best Sonic Youth song ever. Every band I've been in has used this album as a kind of mystical reference point for its raw power."

Part Chimp's new album IV is out now and available here in hmv's online store.
