My Record Collection by PHOX's Matteo Roberts

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of country pop types PHOX and their keyboard player Matteo Roberts, let's see what he's picked out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Big Willie Style by Will Smith. I think this was an "in line at Best Buy begging mom for extra allowance" kind of deal."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Juturna by Circa Survive is an album that still remains mysterious to me, but changed the way I understood and heard instrument arrangement/composition. The guitar work was unlike anything I had heard, and seeing it performed in the basement of The Rave in Milwaukee in front of 50 sweat-drenched kids was one of the most formative and iconic musical experiences for me!"

The record I've played more than any other is...

"The College Dropout by Kanye West  is an album that I couldn't stop spinning throughout high school. One of my best and most influential friends turned me onto the album, and we both couldn't stop. It's also one of the only albums I've memorized nearly all lyrics to..."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio, by the same artists. This one is just pure class: it's like champagne on a breezy patio. I've always been hypnotized by Stan Getz' tone and playing, and Oscar has a heart of gold, and shows it with his playing."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Plans by Death Cab For Cutie is an album that maybe isn't always there when I'm down, but it's definitely one of the most nostalgic albums in my life and in particular the last 3 tracks are a thing I can repeat endlessly. They're such simple and beautiful songs that burrowed into my heart and resonate and I need them most!"

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Astro Lounge by Smash Mouth...I know this one is gonna get the blogs and the kids fired up, but LISTEN. TRUST ME. The album is full of daring and innovative production thanks to Eric Valentine. Fun fact, he produced Nickel Creek's "Why Should The Fire Die" which is another favorite of mine."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"We Are Rising by Son Lux! It's not even fair! It's one of the prettiest pieces of art, and the vinyl looks amazing as well (translucent freezy-pop blue)."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. Do I really need to say anything? It's a party!"

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Weezer (Green Album) by Weezer. It's a fine album, but definitely missing the raw tenacity of Pinkerton and the like."

The last record I bought was…

"Silent Treatment by Highasakite. We met these fine folks a couple years ago at SXSW and have since remained in touch and Kristoffer (guitar, flugabone) actually lent his talents on our new album! They're a great band with great songs, and are even better live!"

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2014 is…

"Shapes That Kiss The Lips Of God by J.E. Sunde. This album was maybe in close contention for the "most listened to" spot, and I've only heard the unfinished version, from about 6 months ago. So I hope that gives you some scope as to how obsessed and excited I am for people to hear this music. It is sublime writing and arranging!"

The greatest record of all time is…

"Illinois by Sufjan Stevens. Speaking of sublime writing and arranging...This one is a classic. Greatest record of all time? Maybe not, but it was what came to mind, and I do think that it merits an honor of that tier. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of art that I can think of from the last decade or two. Praise Sufie."

PHOX's self-titled debut album will be released on September 1st and is available to pre-order now from hmv stores and from our digital store here.
