My Record Collection by Rise Against’s Joe Principe

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week it's the turn of Rise Against bassist Joe Principe, let’s see what he picks out...

You can listen to a selection of Joe's picks in the below playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This was AC/DC’s Highway To Hell. I was in second grade and I had a lot of older cousins and they all listened to rock music. I started asking them about it and then I bought that record. I fell in love with it, but when I got to fifth grade my sister had started to listening to a lot of punk and new wave, and she took me with her down that path.”

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I bought two Minor Threat records on cassette, their full-length record and Out of Step, that day made me want to pick up an instrument and live the energy that they were exuding. DC Hardcore really got me going.”

The record I've played more than any other is…

"I would say the first Bad Brains’ record. There’s nothing like it, they’re such a unique band, they’re exceptional musicians, they spearheaded punk rock, they played so fast, that’s the record for me."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I’m a sucker for Screeching Weasel. They remind me of a very happy, carefree time in my life growing, up, always bring a smile."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I would say Descendants’ They’ve got this track called ‘Pep Talk’, it’s about that very thing, so their record All.."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"I think Naked Raygun are the most underrated band. They’ve got this record called All Rise, it’s pure genius.”

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"I like a statement record cover. Bad Religion’s Suffer, that’s a great cover, so much symbolism and care."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Bad Religion’s Suffer again, it’s such a statement for just one word."

The last record I bought was…

"It was AFI’s new record The Blood Album. Those guys are good friends of mine, it’s a great record and I’m really proud of them for making it."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

"There are so many. I’ve never understood the appeal of Led Zeppelin. I like classic rock, but I don’t understand what the allure is about Led Zeppelin."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"Rancid. They’ve got a record out the same day as ours. It’s called Troublemaker, I can’t wait to hear it."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Bad Religion’s No Control. There’s not a bad song on that record, it’s flawless."

Rise Against’s new album Wolves is released next Friday (June 9th) and available to pre-order here in hmv’s online store.
