My Record Collection by Sabaton's Hannes Van Dahl

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Swedish metal types Sabaton and drummer Hannes Van Dahl, let's see what's lurking in his crates...

The First Record I Ever Bought With My Own Money Was…

"That would have been Metallica's Ride The Lightning which me and my cousin bought (together) from his older brother. It was a cassette, and not even the original record but the songs were on there with some other cool stuff. We were out camping in his backyard and he had this big old boom box that made us poor from buying new batteries all the time. There was a heavy storm outside the tent when we played 'For Whom The Bells Tolls' and you can guess the rest. God damn, heavy!!"

The Record That Made Me Want To Be In A Band Was…

"Motley Crüe's self titled album. It's incredible, still…"

The Record I've Played More Than Any Other Is…

"I listen to a lot of records in different genres, but one of the records that have been played a lot in the Van Dahl house throughout the years is Mercyful Fate's Into The Unknown. Maybe a weird choice, but I just dig it. Also one of those records I started listening to thanks to the drums."

The Record That Always Makes Me Feel Good Is…

"John Mayer's Battle Studies or any of James Brown's albums, makes you all groovy and start dancing and shit!!"

The Record I Turn To When I'm Feeling Down Is…

"Mastodon's Leviathan, it just slays."

The Record I Think Is The Most Underrated Of All Time Is…

"Hmm, I don’t really know. Never thought of music in that way I guess, if I like an album I like it. And I really don’t care if anybody else likes it or not. But I'd be happy to recommend one I really like with fantastic musicians and lyrics, that's Decapitated's Carnival Is Forever."

The Record With My Favourite Cover Art Is…

"Kind Diamond's Them, the mood is set before you've heard any of the music."

The Record With My Favourite Title Is…

"D-A-D´s latest made me laugh, and if you know that they got almost got sued by Disney I think this title is genius: DIC.NII.LAN.DAFT.ERD.ARK."

The Record I Can't Understand Why Everybody Loves Is…

"As I said earlier people listen to whatever they want, and if I don’t like it, I don’t bother. I don’t get some bands that just do the radio thing and then go and suck live. For me the whole package of a band/artist is important, and hearing a cool band live I still what get´s me turned on, and want to buy their stuff."

The Last Record I Bought Was…

"I bought the whole Led Zeppelin and The Who discography some time ago, feels like something you should have in your collection."

The Record I'm Most Looking Forward To Hearing In 2014 Is..

"We have a new album coming out. I’m really proud of what we created, And I’m looking forward to unpacking that and listen to it with my buds."

The Greatest Record Of All Time Is…

"I’d go with Led Zeppelin II."

Sabaton's new album Heroes is out next Monday (May 19th) and can be pre-ordered from hmv stores now.
