My Record Collection by Sandy Rivera (Kings Of Tomorrow)

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Sandy Rivera, known to some of you as the Kings Of Tomorrow, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Eric B & Rakim - 'Eric B. Is President'. That was the biggest tune around in my hood. I am sure it was money I stole from my dad's pocket, but it was mine when I had it in my hands."

The record that made me want to get into production was…

"Art Of Noise - 'Moments In Love'. It was a huge tune for me, it had no real vocals, the same way most House records are today."

The record I've played more than any other is...

"My own Kings Of Tomorrow - 'Finally' as I am asked to play it so much at gigs and it still works the floor."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"This is Zero 7's album - Simple Things. It’s an album I can play over and over from start to finish. Cat Power’s music does the same to me also."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I'd chose A Tribe Called Quest's 'Electric Relaxation', it just settles me down and makes me feel good."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is...

"I'd say Prince - Sexy Dancer' from 1979. It's such a dope disco club record, but I think it's underated compared to all the Prince records that most people know."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Magma – Kobaia. The only collection of records I have are old Jazz influenced tunes. About 20 record boxes with 10 vinyls in each. From Miles Davis, John Coltrane and very early Quincy Jones Big Band bits and plenty more."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Grandmaster Flash – White Lines. It is what it is."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Psy - 'Gangnam Style'. I don’t need to go further on this one."

The last record I bought was…

"Hot Creation – Forever EP – Sante Sidney Charles Forever Russ Yallop Remix. Just played it in Belgrade’s beer festival and that was my last gig before this interview."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"Louie Vega - Adeva - 'I Deserve To Breathe' (Louie Vega Gene Perez Bass Mix). Would love to be some place and hearing this come on. I would make my way to the dance floor."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock. It’s why Hip Hop is around as a sound, a voice, a look. I was 11 years old in NYC when this came out. This is one of the greatest for me for the chain reaction it started to my generation, but I need to add that Kraftwerk as a band has done the same or even more to electronic music."
