My Record Collection by Scar Symmetry's Henrik Ohlsson

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of death metallers Scar Symmetry's sticksman Henrik Ohlsson to rifle through his records. Be warned, there's a lot of KISS...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Iron Maiden - Killers. This was back in 1983 and I really wanted KISS's Lick it up, but it was new and more expensive so I had to go for Iron Maiden's second album. But I actually bought the KISS album a few weeks later and it changed my life forever."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Probably KISS's Lick It Up'.  I remember hearing the opening track 'Exciter' for the first time and just staring at the record player in pure awe! I had never experienced anything cooler than that."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"The first WASP album. I've been listening to that one regularly since it came out in 1984, I love the rawness of that album and Blackie`s vocals are more brutal than any death/black metal vocals I've heard. Pure attitude and heart."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"KISS's Unmasked. Totally underrated album. Very poppy but it automatically gets me in a good mood. Ace Frehley contributed with some of the album`s best songs which was kind of unique for that album."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Morbid Angel's Covenant. When I feel down I really want to hear some good brutal music, I should probably listen to KISS and get in a good mood but instead I usually turn to Morbid Angel and evolve the “down” feeling to worldcrusher status. GAH!"

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"Well, KISS - Unmasked. I think that once a band is not considered “cool” anymore people tend to dismiss anything the band does for a period of time. That`s what happened to KISS in 1979 up to 1983 when they took the make-up off and reinvented the band. And I mean, they released some sub-standard material through the years (hello, Gene!) but I think “Unmasked” was a good album. It just wasn`t considered cool at the time."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Iron Maiden's Live After Death. A lot of the Iron Maiden cover art was magnificent, it was made for vinyl where you could really study all the details and stuff. The artwork for that live album is extra evil in my opinion."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Sabbat's Dreamweaver. For some reason that title holds a lot of magic for me. I`ve been inspired by Martin Walkyier`s lyrics since I first started writing lyrics and he`s one of the few really good metal lyricists out there."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Avenged Sevenfold's Hail To The King. I don`t think everybody loves it but since it sold a huge amount of copies it must have appealed to a lot of people. I just don't think it`s that good. I guess I don`t get it…"

The last record I bought was…

"A Johnny Cash compilation double CD. I needed some hillbilly music for my car, that`s all."

The record i've loved most in 2014 is...

"Conquering Dystopia, the new project featuring Jeff Loomis among others."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Today it is Judas Priest “Painkiller”. Tomorrow it might be something else!"
