My Record Collection by Steve Hill

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Steve Hill, award-wielding Canadian singer and blues guitar great, let's see what he picks out…

The first record I bought with my own money was…

“Probably a 45, Van Halen Jump. That or Valotte by Julian Lennon. It's hard to remember… that was a long time ago! By the age of 12 I was buying Dire Straits, Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, then I got into Zeppelin, Hendrix, Cream and from there got into the blues, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, BB King, Buddy Guy etc...”

The record that made me want to be in a band was...

“Led Zeppelin II. Although at the same time I was listening to Cream a lot. Hendrix, too.”

The record I've played more than any other is probably…

“Robert Johnson, King Of The Delta Blues Singers. Bought my fist copy 25 years ago on vinyl, then on cassette, then on CD and finally back on vinyl again! I never get tired of it and although it's just one guy singing and playing the guitar, I still hear nuances I haven't heard before every time I put it on!”

The record that always makes me feel good is…

“Grateful Dead - Europe ‘72. Bought it in Winnipeg the last time I was there (October) and it's been playing in my van 80 percent of the time ever since! I became a total Deadhead because of this album and bought dozens of Dead albums since. To me it's still their best.”

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

“Anything by Otis Rush! Especially the stuff he recorded in the 50s for Cobra records.”

The most underrated album of all time is…

“The Faces - A Nod Is As Good As Wink… To A Blind Horse. As good as anything by the Stones. Also Before The Frost…Until The Freeze by the Black Crowes. Great album that totally went under the radar. Plus the Kinks Village Green Preservation Society. Big Star's first two albums. There are so many great records that people don't know about!”

The record with my favourite cover art is...

“Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love. Also Disraeli Gears by Cream, American Beauty by the Dead… I like psychedelic album covers!”

The record with my favourite title is…

“Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced. It says it all. Somehow you couldn't be before listening to the album and you were after!”

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is...

“I don't want to answer that question.”

The last record I bought is…

“Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star Club. I had been trying to find it for years and I finally got it! Insane! Real rock and roll at its best as only the Killer could do.”

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing is...

“The new album by Alabama Shakes. Loved their first one. Must have listened to it eight times in a row when I bought it!”

The greatest record of all time...

“That's a tough one! “Hard to beat The Beatles Sgt Pepper!”
