My Record Collection by The Black Angels' Christian Bland

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week it's the turn of Texan psychedelic powerhouses The Black Angels and their vocalist Christian Bland, let's see what he's got for us...

Check out a selection of Christian's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This is The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was the first record I discovered in my Dad's collection, and I wanted a brand new copy of my own that didn't skip."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I'd say The Velvet Underground & Nico, I learned how to play the guitar to the songs on this record."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"The Jesus & Mary Chain's Psychocandy, I love starting the day with this record. It makes me feel like there's nothing wrong, even though there definitely is."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"This is Love - Forever Changes. The instrumentation on this record sounds so hopeful, but upon closer inspection, the lyrics are anything but..."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. The music on this record reminds me of Disney World, but just like on 'Forever Changes', the lyrics are quite the opposite and have a very sombre mood..."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"This would be TiBilly Nicholls - Would You Believe?. It was inspired by Pet Sounds and written by Nicholls while still a teenager and produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. They spent so much money on the production that they were only able to print 100 copies. Fortunately, a reprint was issued in 1998."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators. A huge inspiration for my design style. Simple, yet mind expanding."

The record with my favourite title is…

"This is The Deviants - Ptoof! This reminds me of a sound effect from the original Batman television show."

The last record I bought was…

"This would be The Creation - Action Painting. Just released in March of this year. One of my favorite bands with new mixes and a few tracks I'd never heard."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"The Jesus & Mary Chain - Damage & Joy. A favourite band of mine, I'm looking forward to hearing what they're up to now."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Nothing touches the space age fairy tale world Syd Barrett created on this album. I discovered this record after learning that they were recording next door to the Beatles while they were working on Sgt. Peppers."

The Black Angels' new album Death Song is out now and available here in hmv's online store.
