My Record Collection by The Boxer Rebellion's Nathan Nicholson

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Nathan Nicholson, frontman with The Boxer Rebellion, let's see what he's got in mind...

You can listen to some of Nathan's recommendations in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was...

"Paradise City by Guns N’ Roses. I would’ve been eight or nine by the time I bought it. I liked it because they scared the shit out of me."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Wonderwall by Oasis. That record, as cliche as it sounds, changed my life. It was my launchpad."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"This is What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. It has the ability to make me cry and smile all at once for no particular reason."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Where The Streets Have No Name by U2. If I happen to be drunk, I’d rather hear this than anything else in the world."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"At Dawn by My Morning Jacket is like the warm blanket of nostalgia. Even though they’re a Kentucky band and I was already in the UK at the time, it reminds me of the south and where I grew up in East Tennessee."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"The Rat by Walkman. If I were a professional wrestler this would be my walk-in music. I know it was a relatively big song when it came out, but they’re a hugely underrated band."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Violator by Depeche Mode. I love the simple printed red rose on an all black background. It instantly makes me interested."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Everything about it is flawless. I’d love to know, or at least have a game naming great songs with bad titles, because I think it’d be very difficult to find any."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"Anarchy In The UK by Sex Pistols. I think it was such a of- the-time-and-place phenomenon that I’ve never really bought into it as something that I could relate to."

The last record I bought was…

"Junk by M83. He’s one of those guys that makes me feel very inadequate as a musician. A super talented individual."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"I always love hearing a new Biffy Clyro album. We toured with them years ago and they’ve since gone on to be gigantic, but they’re continually still very interesting and amazingly great. You’d never want them to play support."

The greatest record of all time is…

"#1 Record by Big Star. 'Thirteen' is the best song about adolescence - discovering what love is for the first time. Maybe it was their back story and the professional and personal hardships that they went through that really resonate with me, but there’s a definite magic with this tune."

The Boxer Rebellion's new album Ocean By Ocean is released on Friday and is available to pre-order here in hmv's online store.
