My Record Collection by The Family Rain's Will Walter

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of The Family Rain's Will Walter, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"Wheatus. I was about 10 years old, at the time and it was huge. I think i thought it was hip at the time. I have grown less fond of Wheatus as time has passed."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"The White Album by The Beatles. We were brought up on this record and it is one of my first memories of music. It is the pinnacle of music and the highest bar set to reach."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones. I can listen to this album without trying to analyse it and I enjoy listening to it for that reason. It sounds like it just fell out of the band naturally, like one big jam… One big pot of rhythm and blues jam."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver is a record I listen to when I need to cheer up. It has enough pop bravado with a good amount of cutting bitterness. I used to listen to this album a lot with friends while drinking before a night out. It has some good memories, some bad to, but mostly good."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"Simon And Garfunkel - Sound Of Silence. Simon and Garfunkel have a incredible ability to pull on your heartstrings. When  I am feeling sorry for myself,  I lay on my bed and listen to this album. They have the softest male vocals to, liquid gold."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"The Bee Gees - 1st. I discovered this album recently. It is an absolute hidden masterpiece. There musical career is dominated by 3 or 4 massive hits which are good, but this album is a very early raw version of their talent . I enjoy finding albums like this it is rewarding."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"Don Mclean - American Pie, It is just a picture of his thumb painted with the American flag. It is a very simple striking image well executed. I have it hung on my bedroom wall."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish , I think this is a very poignant album title and something for people to sink their teeth into. It is aggressive and has punk attitude to go alongside a clever album."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"The 1975’s … not my cup of tea."

The last record I bought was…

"Harry Nilsson - Greatest Hits. Nilsson is one of those people who you barley know, then you find out you do know about 10 of his songs already. The best of is a songwriting master class and I am enjoying it very much at this moment in time.."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2014 is…

"Lana Del Rey - Ultra Violence. Now her first album has had time to sink in i realise just how good it was. There was a lot of solo women around at the time and looking back she was on another level. It is classic Americana and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Yet to be written. I think there is better music to be written, We have millions of years to do it. Hope can go a long way."

The Family Rain's new single 'Don't Waste Your Time' is released on May 12. It is taken from the album Under The Volcano, which is available to buy in hmv stores and in our digital store now.
