My Record Collection By The Hold Steady's Craig Finn

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week it's the turn of The Hold Steady mainman Craig Finn, let's see what he chooses...

Check out a selection of Craig's picks in this playlist...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"The first record with my own money was The Rolling Stones' Tattoo You. My parents and grandparents had bought me albums before that, the first one ever being Bay City Rollers' Greatest Hits followed by a bunch of Kiss albums."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"This was The Replacements' Hootenanny. I couldn’t believe that they lived in Minneapolis, my hometown. It gave me the sense that being in a good band was a possibility. I didn’t have that before."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"The Clash's London Calling. There’s so much depth and it has a bit of everything."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"I'd say Pavement's Crooked Rain Crooked Rain makes me feel carefree and sort of like I’m driving through California. I associate that album with warm weather for some reason."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"R.E.M's Reckoning - it doesn’t help me feel less down but maybe helps me get inside it. It’s a wistful record and I listened to it a lot in confusing times. I associate this record with colder weather. Deep autumn."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"The Rolling Stones' Goat’s Head Soup. Sure it’s got some hits but I really think it’s the best Rolling Stones record, which I rarely hear anyone say. It’s all the stuff I like about the Stones,  drugs, magic and capes."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"The Velvet Underground's With Nico, it's classic and elegant. I love the Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen artwork too."

The record with my favourite title is…

"This is Ron Wood's I’ve Got My Own Album To Do. Genius."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"I can understand that everyone can find something good in any album. Music is so connected to memory and emotion. Any album playing while you are having a good time can sound pretty great."

The last record I bought was…

"It was a used copy of Grey Matter EP on Dischord."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2017 is…

"Probably the new Spoon record. They're such a great band."

The greatest record of all time is…

"My favourite is Replacements' Let it Be,  but I’d also have to put The Clash's London Calling up there. These kind of lists are hard for me. I listened to Bad Brains' Rock for Light yesterday and it sounded like the best record ever easily at that moment."

Craig Finn's new album We All Want The Same Things is released on March 24th and is available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page.
