My Record Collection by Turin Brakes'

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of Turin Brakes' Gale Paridjanian, let's see what he's got for us...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was...

"100 minutes of Chuck Berry, it was around the time Back To The Future came out but Ollys dad had already taught us how good Chuck was. I saw him live when we were eight  and even had black tie style rock'n'roll suits."

The record that made me want to be in music was...

"I got an incredible feeling from The Best of Chas and Dave when I was 6 or 7 , so I think that was the start..."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Either Lovesexy or The Rocky IV soundtrack . There were so many classics on Rocky IV looking back , songs that still hang around now, and this huge air of triumph running through it all . And Lovesexy ... These two records turned me from a boy into a man."

The record that always makes me feel good is...

"At the moment it's Lean On' Major Lazer. When I get hooked on something it goes on in the morning and the breakfast disco starts."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is...

"No Substitute by John Lee Hooker, soft slow heartbreak. When I get down I look high and low round the house for this old cassette, just to hear John Lee tell me that "...there's no substitute, no substitute for love.."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is...

"Anything by the incredible Turin Brakes, ahem. They're like the Savoy hotel being treated like a B and B."

The record with my favourite cover art is...

"Miles Davis' Bitches Brew is a great cover but the music freeaaks me out , man. First time I listened to it I thought the ground was falling away . But the cover is incredible by Mati Klarwein so I keep it around."

The record with my favourite title is...

"Mastered By Guy At The Exchange - Max Tundra. Turin Brakes just mastered their new album with Guy, it's been an ambition since seeing the title of that album. (Thank God he's really good)."

The last record I bought was...

"Bright Sunny South -  Sam Amidon on an actual physical, touch it CD. It's super peaceful and very honest sounding, I heard him first on a Nico Mulhy track, it was very arty, just like me."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2015 is…

"More from Max Jury and Benjamin Leftwich - I've heard a few of his new songs and loved his first album, it had a whole world to it. Or Turin Brakes, I hear they are good..."

The greatest record of all time is...

"It might actually be Revolver by the Beatles, but I've only just come round to this, it may be an age thing, Very recently I did think that a cog on the wheel had turned with music and the new form was now widely understood by everyone, which might mean all the past music becomes a form of heritage. But its just a theory at the moment, I'm still working on it..."

Turin Brakes' new album Lost Property is released on January 29th and is available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page.
