hmv.com previews... 2017's Best Hip-Hop and Dance Albums

Over the next 10 days we'll be previewing 100 of the best albums you can expect to hear in 2017. Most will come out, some inevitably won't, but they are all worth getting excited about.

We continue today with the best of hip-hop and dance...

Major Lazer

A little background…

Major Lazer’s third album Peace Is The Mission has seen them move into the big leagues with arenas and festival headline slots now a regular thing. With their fourth studio album they’ll be looking to keep that momentum going...

Any titles yet?

Yup, it’s called Music Is The Weapon.

Have they got a producer on board?

The three in the group themselves have also called on Benny Blanco for additional support, he’s got a hit or two under his belt...

Any special guests?

Just a few,  Justin Bieber, MØ, Showtek, Bad Royale, Nicki Minaj, PARTYNEXTDOOR, ex Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello, Sia, Bonnie McKee, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Gwen Stefani, Selah Sue, Usher, Sam Hunt, Tove Lo and Tinashe are all set to appear.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

More thumping dancefloor fillers. It’s due to be with us in the early part of 2017.

London Grammar

A little background…

It’s been almost four years since London Grammar unveiled their hugely acclaimed debut album If You Wait and for the last two years it’s all gone very, very quiet. But that all looks set to change soon...

Any titles yet?

None yet.

Have they got a producer on board?

All the production was handled by the band themselves on the first album, expect the same to be the case here.

Any special guests?

No word on that yet.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

The album was widely expected to hit shelves last year, but 2016 has come and gone. However the band are booked for a big Australian tour next year so something is clearly on the way, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Iggy Azalea

A little background…

At the start of 2016 Iggy Azalea looked all set to follow-up her hit debut album The New Classic, but life got in the way, specifically the rapper’s relationship with fiance Nick Young, which ended in the summer and led to her taking some time out to get herself together. She has now promised fans that she’ll be back with a brand new album in 2017...

Any titles yet?

Indeed, it’s called Digital Distortion.

Have they got a producer on board?

Lots of production talent. The biggest names we know about are Zedd and frequent Kanye collaborator Verse Simmonds.

Any special guests?

Rappers YG and French Montana are both expected to guest.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

More icy cool beats and flamboyant verses. The first single is due in January and the album will follow.

Bebe Rexha

A little background…

After spending the last couple of years being a featured artist with the likes of David Guetta, Eminem and Martin Garrix, singer Bebe Rexha finally goes it alone in 2017 with the release of her first solo album.

Any titles yet?

Indeed, it’s going to be called All Your Fault.

Have they got a producer on board?

The Invisible Men, who were behind the boards for the vast majority of Iggy Azalea’s debut album, have been the key producers on the album.

Any special guests?

A number, three who are all but confirmed are Nicki Minaj, G-Eazy and Ty Dolla $ign.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

Lots of powerhouse R&B and it’s due in February.

Sampha

A little background…

It’s been a long time coming for South London’s Sampha, but the singer, who has worked with everyone from Jessie Ware to Kanye West, finally gets to put out an album of his own in 2017.

Any titles yet?

It’s going to be called Process.

Have they got a producer on board?

Sampha has handled that himself.

Any special guests?

Not that we know of.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

Considered, heartswelling soulful music. It’s out on February 3rd.

Jay-Z

A little background…

It’s been a little while since Jay-Z had a new album, four years to be precise. He’s spent the last couple collaborating as well as building his business empire. But a new record is in the offing...

Any titles yet?

Nope.

Have they got a producer on board?

Details are scant on this.

Any special guests?

There almost certainly will be, but we don’t know much about them.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

The rumour mill has been abuzz with the prospect of a joint album between the rapper and wife Beyonce for some time now, but whether that will be his next album is unlikely as Beyonce is still focused on promoting Lemonade. A new album is coming, but when? We don’t know...

Bonobo

A little background…

Eccentric dance producer Simon Green will release his sixth album under his Bonobo moniker next year, an album which has been recorded across the globe...

Any titles yet?

It’s called Migration.

Have they got a producer on board?

Green handles that himself.

Any special guests?

Yes indeed, this album features Nick Murphy (formerly Chet Faker), Rhye, Nicole Miglis and Innov Gnawa.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

More cerebral euphoria from a well-travelled artist. This album, Green’s sixth, features field recordings including an elevator in Hong Kong airport, rain in Seattle, a tumble dryer in Atlanta and a fan boat engine in New Orleans, as you do. It's out on January 13th and you can pre-order it here.

SOHN

A little background…

SOHN, or Christopher Taylor he is formally known, wowed folks with his debut album Tremors, a mixture of ambient electronics and thundering percussion. In the last couple of years he’s focused on production with work with Lana Del Rey and Banks now on his CV, but he’ll be back front and centre in 2017...

Any titles yet?

Yes, it’s been named Rennen.

Have they got a producer on board?

He’s handled that himself.

Any special guests?

None.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

More glacial electronica with a bigger sonic palette and renewed confidence. It’s due out January 13th.

Tinie Tempah

A little background…

The follow-up to 2013’s Demonstration has been a longtime coming for Tinie Tempah, it was originally due out in the summer, was delayed until the autumn and is now due for early 2017. It does feature some big hits though, specifically 'Not Letting Go', Tempah's collaboration with Jess Glynne, 'Girls Like', his track with Zara Larsson, and 'Turn The Music Louder', which he made with Katy B and KDA.

Any titles yet?

Yes indeed, it’s been given the title Youth.

Have they got a producer on board?

Details of that have yet to be confirmed.

Any special guests?

Lots, besides the many already revealed you can almost certainly expect a few more...

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

More swaggering hip-hop with some big hit singles. It’s due out on January 27th and you can pre-order it here.

Fergie

A little background…

It’s been over a decade since The Black Eyed Peas singer released her debut solo album The Dutchess. In the years between she’s been back with her day job and has started a family with husband Josh Duhamel. But now she’s back with a brand new solo album and big plans for 2017...

Any titles yet?

Yes, it’s going to be called Double Dutchess.

Have they got a producer on board?

The rapper has been collaborating with Toby Gad, the same writer who helped her pen ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ as well as rapper Polow Da Don. Producer Mike Will Made It has also made a contribution, but her bandmate will.i.am has been overseeing the album.

Any special guests?

We’d expect a few, but the tracklisting isn’t out yet.

What can we expect and when can we expect it?

More brassy and shiny hip-hop, look for a release in the first half of the year.
