My Record Collection by Yuck's Max Bloom

In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of fuzzed up rockers Yuck and their singer Max Bloom. This is what he picked out...

(You can listen to a selection of tracks from Max's picks in this playlist).

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"This is Michael Jackson - Bad. It's really difficult to remember what music I listened to as a child, let alone what my first record was. I remember listening to a lot of Michael Jackson in my childhood though. I used to practice guitar solos along to his music. One time my family was having lunch at the hard rock cafe in London and Michael Jackson walked in surrounded by cameras and he was wearing a white dental mask. I think I was dancing on the table for some reason."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"I'll say Saves The Day's Stay What You Are. I remember seeing a live version of 'Cars & Calories' on MTV2, and I literally went out straight away to my nearest hmv and bought their album. It's the one album from my childhood that I still love today."

The record I've played more than any other is…

"This is The Zombies - Odyssey & Oracle. I didn't realise how much I've listened to this record until I saw how many times I'd played it on iTunes. I love everything about this album, the songs, the production, the lyrics, the cover art... it just transports me to another world."

The record that always make me feel good is…

"Sugar - Copper Blue. This is just such a sunny feel good album! Every song is so happy and the guitar sounds are so thick, its impossible not to feel overwhelmingly positive when you listen to it."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"This is Jeff Buckley's Grace. This record is great for long car journeys. It's an impossibly beautiful record and you can really get lost in it. There's something so yearning and melancholy about the whole thing, I can really feel the heartache in the songs."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"This is Slint - Spiderland. This is just an amazing album from start to finish. People say they invented post-rock, but really this album doesn't quite fit into any genre. It's a very strange and dark sounding album, spiderland seems to feel quite apt as a title."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"This is Joy Division's Closer. I've always been a fan of record covers with white borders for some reason. This cover feels very iconic, and there's something very stark and isolating about it."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies of the Future. I find this album title really funny and clever, I'm not sure why. It makes me wonder how people in the future will regard music made today, and whether they'll give it the same reverence we give to music from the past."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"I'd have to say something by Guns N Roses. I get that they were a very important band in some people's eyes but I can't really listen to their music. My school band did do a ska punk cover of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' though..."

The last record I bought was…

"This would be Fugazi - End Hits. I've been going through a huge Fugazi phase recently. I love this album a lot, its just very energetic and aggressive, it makes me want to punch a hole in a wall or say something obnoxious on the internet."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2016 is…

"I don't really listen to much new music but I'm looking forward to the new Thermals record."

The greatest record of all time is…

"I would probably have to say Abbey Road by The Beatles. I wouldn't say its the greatest record of all time, but its the one that means the most to me."

Yuck's new album Stranger Things is out now and available to download on the right-hand side of the page.
