10 Reasons To Get Excited For... Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This month sees the return of that most beloved of film franchises, Star Wars. Join us as we take a look at the 10 reasons to be excited for the most anticipated movie in any galaxy (be it here or far, far away)... The Force Awakens.

The veteran cast are back!

From the get go, there were rumours the original cast of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher & Mark Hamill would be making their return to the galaxy far, far away in The Force Awakens. And, despite denials from all involved, and seeming too good to be true, Lucasfilm revealed that not only would Han, Leia and Luke be returning to the franchise, but they’d be joined by trusted counterparts, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Kenny Baker (R2-D2). The old gang is back together.

Keeping it real...

If there’s one thing the majority of Wars fans will attest to about the Prequel Trilogy, it’s the reliance on CGI & ‘green screens’ in favour of real sets. So, after seeing the ‘Force for Change’ videos direct from the desert of Abu Dhabi and Pinewood Studios, complete with market stalls, latex suited extras in alien garb, X-Wings, the two short-but-sweet teaser trailers, the reveal of the Astromech droid, BB-8 and the nerd-tear inducing Comic-Con sizzle, it’s with great relief to see that The Force Awakens will be taking the franchise back to its tangible roots.

The introduction of Captain Phasma...

It’s with welcome relief that we’ll get to see the first ever female Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens. Played by Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie, this is no ordinary Stormtrooper; this is the silver armoured, cape wearing commander of the First Order’s legions of troopers, Captain Phasma. With such a brilliant look and Christie’s incredible talent, we’re sure Phasma will be an iconic villain.

The Millennium Falcon is back!

Along with the return of Han and Chewie, a special mention has to be made for the Millennium Falcon. Since it first graced screens in 1977, the Falcon has become one of the most iconic elements of the Saga. Hopeful of its return, fans were overjoyed to see the ‘Hunk of Junk’ soar in all its beauty in the first teaser trailer. And no one can deny the excitement of wanting to see the Falcon make the jump to hyper-space once again.

So is John Williams...

A man as synonymous with the Saga as George Lucas, John Williams needs no introduction. His orchestral interpretation of the universe is nothing short of genius and he’s back on board for this movie. We cannot wait to hear that theme again..

The New Cast look awesome...

With Hamill, Ford and Fisher returning to hand over the mantle, whoever it’s handed to will have to ensure the safety of the saga for years to come. So, it’s some relief to have Attack the Block’s John Boyega, Ex Machina’s Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac, Girls’ Adam Driver, 12 Years a Slave’s Lupiter Nyong’o, rising star, Daisy Ridley and, the aforementioned, Gwendoline Christie taking the reins.

JJ Abrams is behind the camera...

Being the brains behind Lost, Fringe and Cloverfield, as well as giving us two brilliant Star Trek movies, there’s no better choice than JJ Abrams. The veteran actors, along with pretty much everyone else involved in the movie, have each said they became involved because of JJ. He shares the same child-like charm, passion and enthusiasm for the story as the young George Lucas, which makes him perfect to kick-start this new trilogy. In JJ we trust.

It’s all been shot on film...

In keeping with JJ’s passion for keeping things real, he’s opted to shoot the entire movie on film. Not a single digital camera has been used to capture The Force Awakens. And on top of that, large portions of the movie have been shot on IMAX 75mm film. This means we’ll have the best looking Star Wars movie to date.

It’s got a script from the best...

Lawrence Kasdan wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, along with the Indiana Jones classic, Raiders of the Lost Ark. With, arguably, the best Star Wars movie under his writing belt, Kasdan is as much a part of the franchise as John Williams, the Millennium Falcon and the veteran cast members. So, it’s fitting that Kasdan would opt to return and pen The Force Awakens... The circle is now complete.

Kylo Ren’s Broad-Saber...

When the first teaser trailer hit for The Force Awakens, fans weren’t all that impressed with the reveal of Kylo Ren’s handmade Lightsaber. But, after having seen the latest teaser, a whole bunch of images and the release of the ‘Force Friday’ merchandise, the excitement around Ren’s weapon, nicknamed the ‘Broad-Saber’, has begun to grow, leaving fans eager to see just how he’ll avoid hitting himself with that flaming hilt.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released into cinemas on December 18th.
