10 Things You Didn’t Know About… Elf

It took over $220 million at the box office, become a must-watch festive classic and inspired thousands of christmas costumes, it’s Jon Favreau’s Elf. Starring Will Ferrell, Zoey Deschanel, James Caan and Ed Asner, it tells the story of Buddy, a man adopted by Santa Claus and raised as an elf who returns to New York to find his real family.

As we’re well into the festive season we thought we’d have some fun and present 10 things you didn’t know about Elf...

It took 10 years to make it to screen…

The first screenplay for Elf emerged in 1993, meaning it took a hell of a lot of development to get the adventure to the big screen. By the time Jon Favreau signed up to direct and cameras rolled, a lot had changed, including the star, who was supposed to be…

Jim Carrey was supposed to star…

When the film was first discussed Carey attached to play the role of Buddy, but when development dragged on Carey had to jump ship onto other projects, this left the door open for Will Ferrell to step in...

Will Ferrell had his own real-life elf once…

Before he found fame Ferrell worked a series of jobs to get by, one of which was a five-week spell playing Santa Claus at a shopping mall. Chris Katten, who would go on to star alongside Ferrell on Saturday Night Live, played his elf at the mall.

And he caused a couple of real-life accidents…

The great scene where Buddy walks through the Lincoln Tunnel came with a small cost. Ferrell’s appearance in an elf costume startled some motorists and caused a couple of minor traffic accidents.

Jon Favreau adds his own voice to the movie…

The director made himself useful multiple times during the movie, he voices both Mr Narwhal, the irritable racoon and has a brief cameo as Buddy’s doctor.

It was a sweet experience for Will Ferrell, too sweet...

Buddy’s fierce sugar habit is a big feature of the movie, but it’s a habit that caused Ferrell a few problems, giving him horrible headaches and seriously disrupting his sleep.

That epic burp, they got in a specialist…

After necking a two litre bottle of Coca-Cola, Buddy brings up an epic burp, one that last a full 12 seconds. That burp is a real, but they had to get in a specialist, actor Maurice LaMarche, who was famed for his burping abilities. You’ll know him best for voicing Brain in classic cartoon Pinky And The Brain...

Will Ferrell turned down a lot of money to do a sequel…

He might have gone back a second time to play Ron Burgundy, but Ferrell had no intention of doing so for a second Elf, even turning down a reported $29 million pay cheque to star in a sequel.

But it’s now a musical…

It opened on Broadway in 2010 and is now running in London’s West End.
