10 things you didn’t know about… Game Of Thrones

With the new series just months away and all the previous ones on offer as part of our Top 100 TV promotion in store, we thought it would be a good time to trawl through the archives and present some choice trivia about the most-talked about show in TV history. So here, without further ado, are 10 things you didn’t know about Game Of Thrones

The show almost never made it to air…

It seems inconceivable now, but Game Of Thrones almost never made it to air. Although all the cast were happy with the show’s pilot episode, which was shot back in 2009, HBO it seemed were not, demanding the whole thing be reshot. Fortunately, they persevered with the series.

Khaleesi has a breed of sea slug named in her honour….

Back in 2013, scientists discovered a new breed of sea slug, struck by its silver braids and golden appendages, they decided to anoint it Tritonia Khaleesi. What an honour!

But another actress almost took Emilia Clarke’s role…

In the original pilot, Tamzin Merchant, best known for her roles in The Tudors, took the role of the fearsome Queen, but, when the show went to series, she was replaced by Clarke. No official reason was given for the change, but it appears there was no bad blood on either side.

Jennifer Ehle was almost Catelyn Stark…

Ehle, who most of you will know best from her role as Elizabeth Bennett in the classic BBC adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, was originally cast as Catelyn Stark and played the role during the original pilot. But, by the time the show went into production, she’d decided the show wasn’t for her…

Snow Patrol, Coldplay and Sigur Ros have all appeared in the show…

It’s like Glastonbury over in Westeros from the amount of bands who’ve turned up in the show at one time or another. You can find Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody singing in the background of a scene in season three, Coldplay drummer Will Champion is among the musicians who perform live at the Red Wedding and Sigur Ros perform their track ‘The Rains of Castamere’ at the wedding of Joeffrey and Margaery.

Lily Allen almost starred in the show…

The ‘Sheezus’ singer was apparently under consideration to play Yara, the estranged sister of Theon Greyjoy, played in the show by her real-life brother Alfie. But once Allen discovered that the role might involved the pair being a bit touchy feely, she decided to decline.

Each episode costs more than three times the average show does…

The average bill for an episode of the series comes in at an average of $6 million. That’s just the average, some, like the episode featuring the battle of Blackwater, cost over $8 million!

George W. Bush’s head accidentally appeared on a spike in a couple of early scenes..

Much to HBO and the writer’s embarrassment, a number of heads displayed on spikes in an early episode were recycled from earlier productions, and, unfortunately, one of the former US President. This actually went unnoticed until an eagle eyed viewer spotted it while watching the DVD…

Dothraki is now a real language…

Never one to do things on the cheap, HBO decided that they would make Dothraki a real dialect and hired language expert David J. Peterson, who’d previously worked on SyFy’s hit drama Defiance to create it. In the end he came up with over 3,000 words for the new language..

The Iron Throne took a whopping two months to construct…

The most coveted seat in television took prop makers over 60 days, it’s made from wood and heated swords. It weighs over 300 kilograms too…
