10 things you didn’t know about… The Big Bang Theory

There’s never been a sitcom like it. It averages 21.3 million viewers every time it’s screened in the US, its stars earn bucketloads of cash each and every week and it’s screened right across the world. As the show's 10th season comes to DVD shelves (it's out on Monday and you can pre-order it on the right-hand side of the page) we thought we’d have a rummage through the archives and present some first class trivia. Here are 10 things you didn’t know about The Big Bang Theory

It was almost called Lenny, Penny and Kenny…

That was one of the show’s planned titles, back when producers were toying with changing Sheldon’s name to Kenny. Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it does it?

The show’s biggest catchphrase was inspired by a grapefruit…

It’s emblazoned across mugs, t-shirts and even duvet covers across the world, but the catchphrase actually originates from a practical joke about a grapefruit. One-time writer on the show Stephen Engel used to say “Bazinga” as “I got you” as part of a running practical joke involving a half-eaten, taped-together grapefruit in the writer’s room. It got said so much writers decided to put it in the show. And now…

It has had a bee named in its honour…

Back in 2013, Brazilian biologists discovered a new type of orchid bee, a bee they decided to christen the Euglossa Bazinga, putting the Big Bang Theory’s most famous catchphrase into nature…

The writers know Penny’s surname, but they’re not telling…

Producer Steve Molaro says the writers have known Penny’s last name, but it’s pretty likely that they’ll never reveal it unless they get really stuck for ideas…

But she was almost called Katie and played by someone else…

It’s hard to imagine The Big Bang Theory without Kaley Cuoco, but it very nearly happened. The show’s pilot, which has never been aired (though there’s a small clip below for you), featured Canadian actress Amanda Walsh playing a character called Katie, who the boys invited to stay with them after finding her down on her luck and homeless outside a sperm bank.

In the end, the character tested badly with early audiences and producers changed tack, bringing in Cuoco’s Penny instead…

Miyam Bialik is actually a scientist…

The permanently frustrated Amy Farrah-Fowler actually has a real-life PhD in neuroscience, which she received from the University Of California.

And Johnny Galecki is a real-life cellist…

He learned in his early twenties, way before he got the part of Leonard on the show…

But Jim Parsons has never seen Star Trek…

He’s shy and softly spoken, much like Sheldon, but Jim Parsons differs from his character in one key area, he’s never seen a single minute of Star Trek…

There is only one staircase on the set…

So many of the show’s key moments have taken place on the walk between the ground floor and the fourth floor where Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment faces Penny’s, but, in truth, there is only one floor, a floor which gets redressed each time a walk through is required.

Five of the cast have just taken a pay cut...

But don't feel too sorry for them, stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar have agreed to earn $900,000 an episode for the show's upcoming 12th season in order for co-stars Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch to up their pay from $175,000 to $425,000 per episode. Nice work if you can get it.

The 10th season of The Big Bang Theory is released on Monday (August 28th) and available to purchase here in hmv's online store.
