10 Things You Didn’t Know About… The Fast & Furious Movies

It’s earned Universal Pictures almost four billion dollars at the box office, made stars of all its cast members and changed the way major studios have handled the biggest of franchises. It can only be the Fast And Furious movies, the ultimate Hollywood juggernaut…

With the sixth film now on offer as part of hmv’s Prequels, Sequels and Beyond campaign and the latest instalment breaking box office records (read our full review here), we thought this was an excellent time to present 10 things you didn’t know about the Fast & Furious movies…

Before Paul Walker got the Fast and Furious gig, some big names were considered for the role of Brian O’Connor...

The film’s producers considered the likes of Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg and Eminem for the role of Brian O’Connor before they eventually offered the role to Walker.

Some big names wanted Jordana Brewster’s part too…

When it came to casting the part of Dominic Torreto’s sister and Brian O’Connor’s love interest a lot of big actresses were in the frame. Natalie Portman, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kirsten Dunst, Bijou Phillips and Jessica Biel all auditioned for the role before it went to Jordana Brewster. Ironically though the part was actually written for Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku, but she turned it down.

It was almost called Race Wars…

The movie had a few working titles before producers settled on the name Fast And Furious, working titles included Race Wars, Racer X and Redline. We think they picked the right title…

Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez had to learn to drive…

After they scored their parts on the first movie, both actresses had to admit that they actually didn’t have driving licenses. They were swiftly sent off to driving school to pass their tests before the cameras rolled…

And Vin Diesel was too big for his car…

Diesel’s character Dominic Torreto drives an RX-7 in the original movie, a car that features a roll cage. Trouble was Diesel is a well-known gym bunny and was too big for the car, so the thing had to be customised…

Diesel and director Rob Cohen both ditched the franchise to work on xXx…

Despite the success of the first film and a reported offer of $25 million to reprise his role in the sequel, Vin Diesel walked away to work with director Rob Cohen on action thriller xXx. Universal repeatedly asked him to change his mind and actually went as far as having two scripts written for the sequel, one with Diesel’s character included and one without.

Redman almost snagged Ludacris’s role in 2 Fast 2 Furious...

The Wu-Tang Clan rapper was first in line for the role of Tej in the second film in the franchise, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. His loss was Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges’ gain…

Vin Diesel traded his cameo in Fast And Furious: Tokyo Drift in for the rights to Riddick…

Diesel was desperate to make a third instalment in the Riddick series, but Universal weren’t keen after the second film The Chronicles Of Riddick performed poorly at the box office. But the studio were also very keen for Vin Diesel to both return to the Fast And Furious franchise and for him to cameo in Tokyo Drift.

Diesel agreed and even waived his fee, but there was a catch, Universal had to sign over the rights to Riddick to him, which they did. He would then go on to make 2014’s Riddick, which he largely self-financed…

A lot of cars have been destroyed to make the films, especially in Furious 7…

Filmmakers managed to smash up a colossal 230 cars during the making of the latest movie, quite a few of which were destroyed during that plane drop sequence...

Sarah Harding almost starred in Fast And Furious 6...

The former Girls Aloud star was considered for the role of Vegh, one of the members of villain Owen Shaw’s deadly, but the role ended up going to Black Sails’ actress Clara Padget.
