Over the next 10 days we're going to be previewing 100 of 2017's best movies. We finish up today with the top dogs, it's time for the blockbusters...

 

Star Wars: Episode VIII

 

What Is It?

The follow-up to the colossally successful Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives with a new director and new plan...

 

Who’s In It?

Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis all return, while there are new roles for Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern.

Carrie Fisher had completed work on the movie before her death, but there may need to be changes to the story as to what they do for future projects with her character.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Rian Johnson, best known for his work on Looper, has both written and directed this movie, with JJ Abrams acting as executive producer.

 

Any Plot Details?

We don’t know much but we do know that it picks up right where The Force Awakens left off, so the question will be, now they’ve found Luke Skywalker, what will they do next?

 

When Can I See It?

It’s due on December 15th. Mark your calendars.

Not yet, we’re expecting one to drop in spring time, possibly to go out with the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.

 

Alien: Covenant

 

What Is It?

We thought Ridley Scott had had his fill of Alien prequels with Prometheus, but thankfully we were wrong and he returns to the source. Expect carnage...

 

Who’s In It?

Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, who return from Prometheus. They are joined by a newly cast Danny McBride, Katherine Waterston, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Billy Crudup, James Franco, Alexander England and Benjamin Rigby.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Scott directs and he works from a script from Bond writer John Logan.

 

Any Plot Details?

This is the follow-up to Prometheus and picks up after the events on that movie. In this film we follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant who find what they believe to be an uncharted paradise in a remote galaxy. Instead what the crew discover is a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

 

When Can I See It?

It was due in the summer but it’s been brought forward and will now hit cinemas on May 19th.

What Is It?

Here we go again, this time with a submarine!

 

Who’s In It?

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell all return to star while Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren all join the cast.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

This one has been directed by F. Gary Gray, the man responsible for Straight Outta Compton, he works from a script from Chris Morgan, who has written the last six movies for the franchise.

 

Any Plot Details?

In the new instalment we find a newly married Dom and Letty enjoying their honeymoon while the rest of the gang are scattered across the world spending their newly acquired riches. But then everything is thrown into chaos when a devious criminal named Cipher seduces Dom back into criminal life and persuades him to betray the rest of his gang.

 

When Can I See It?

April 14th it’ll be with us.

What Is It?

After the success of Maleficent and Cinderella Disney take another animated classic and bring it to the big screen in live action...

 

Who’s In It?

The movie will star Harry Potter's Emma Watson as Belle, with Dracula Untold star Luke Evans playing musclebound villain Gaston and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens in the role of Beast/The Prince. Emma Thompson, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad and Stanley Tucci also have key roles.   

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Bill Condon, who directed both of the final parts of The Twilight Saga, is in the director's chair, with the script coming from Perks Of Being A Wallflower writer Stephen Chbosky and The Huntsman: Winter War's Evan Spiliotopoulos. Alan Menken, who penned many of the classic songs for the original animated movie, has scored the new film.

 

Any Plot Details?

The plot mirrors the classic story, a young woman named Belle is taken prisoner by a hideous beast in exchange for her father’s freedom. As she learns to live in the beast’s castle she begins to see there is a man beyond the beast’s hideous appearance...

What Is It?

25 years after the groundbreaking original we return to visit a sci-fi classic...

 

Who’s In It?

This movie will star a returning Harrison Ford along with Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Barkhad Abdi and Ryan Gosling as well as Jared Leto.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Denis Villeneuve, best known for his work on Sicario and Prisoners, has taken Ridley Scott's place in the director's chair, working from a script by Alien: Covenant scribe Michael Green and original co-writer Hampton Fancher.

 

Any Plot Details?

The new movie is set 30 years after the events of the first film and we have a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling), who unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos.  K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

 

When Can I See It?

It’s released on October 6th.

What Is It?

We’re back with Jack Sparrow for a fifth swashbuckling adventure...

 

Who’s In It?

The movie stars a returning Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, with Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom both back for the new movie. Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario are all newcomers.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

The script has been written by Catch Me If You Can's Jeff Nathanson, with Norwegian pair Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg directing.

 

Any Plot Details?

In this new movie we find Jack Sparrow on the run after he discovers that ghost pirates led by his old nemesis Captain Salazar have escaped from the Devil's Triangle and are determined to kill every pirate at sea. To save himself and all pirates, Sparrow must then find legendary Trident of Poseidon.

Mark Wahlberg returns to reprise his starring role as Cade Yeager.  Starring alongside him are Stanley Tucci, Isabela Moner, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, Santiago Cabrera, Liam Garrigan, Jerrod Carmichael, Mitch Pileggi, Laura Haddock and Anthony Hopkins.

Michael Bay will return to direct the movie, as he has done four times before, with Akiva Goldsman supplying the script. Bay has previously said that this will be the last Transformers movie he directs.

 

Any Plot Details?

Brace yourselves. In this instalment we begin with Optimus Prime finding his home planet, Cybertron, is now a dead planet, one which he comes to find he was responsible for killing. He finds a way to bring the planet back to life, but in order to do so, he needs to find an artefact, which is on Earth. Somehow this links up with Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager and the second World War II. How? We’ll just have wait and see...

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are both back to star and they are joined by LA Confidential's Kim Basinger, The Knick's Eric Johnson, Dark Shadows star Bella Heathcote and The Vampire Diaries' Arielle Kebbel.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

James Foley, best known for his work on House Of Cards and Glengarry Glen Ross, directs Fifty Shades Darker, replacing Sam Taylor-Johnson, who clashed with author E.L. James during the making of Fifty Shades Of Grey.

The script for Fifty Shades Darker has been written by Niall Leonard, husband of E.L. James, an experienced TV writer who has written episodes of Monarch of the Glen, Wire in the Blood and Wild at Heart among other things. He takes over writing duties from Kelly Marcel.

 

Any Plot Details?

The new movie follows a wounded Christian Grey as he tries to win back lover Anastasia, who in turn demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance. As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.

 

When Can I See It?

As they did last time the producers have plumped for as close as they can to Valentine’s Day, in this case, February 10th.

Christopher Nolan has done superheroes, daring heists and tricky thrillers, now it’s time for his war epic...

The movie stars Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Kenneth Branagh, with 71's Jack Lowden, War & Peace's Aneurin Barnard and One Direction's Harry Styles also taking small roles.

Nolan writes and directs this one himself.

 

Any Plot Details?

The movie depicts the real-life events of an infamous battle in World War II where hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops were surrounded by enemy forces.  Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.  

 

When Can I See It?

It’s due out July 21st.
