A Monster Calls - What You Need To Know

It wowed critics and audiences alike and now it comes to DVD shelves. It’s the epic family adventure of the year A Monster Calls and here is everything you need to know about it...

Who’s in it?

Newcomer Lewis MacDougall leads the way, but he’s backed up by an excellent cast that also includes Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Geraldine Chaplin and Liam Neeson, who is on vocal duties for the monster.

Who’s behind the camera?

Juan Antonio Bayona, whose past movies include The Impossible and The Orphanage, is on directorial duties. Patrick Ness adapts his book for the screenplay.

The success of this movie has meant that Bayona is now wrestling with monsters of a whole different kind. He’s now in charge of the sequel to Jurassic World

What’s the plot?

This is young Conor O’Malley’s (MacDougall) story. As the movie begins his life is in turmoil, his mother has terminal cancer, he struggles to get on with his strict grandmother, his father is estranged and he's a constant target for the school bully.

As he sits up late at night, Conor finds support from the unlikeliest source: a drawing of a great, ancient tree monster that comes to life. The monster visits Conor at night to tell him stories and help him come to terms with his difficult situation. With the monster at his back, he begins to face down his problems and take them head on.

Does it deliver?

Absolutely. Stirring, sweeping and wonderfully affecting, this is an absolute must-see.

A Monster Calls is released on DVD on Monday (May 8th) and is available to pre-order here in hmv’s online store.
