Alien: Covenant - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

When Alien was first released in 1979, it’s fair to say not a great deal was expected from it.

A sci-fi splatter with a budget of $10 million with a largely unknown cast and a 42-year old Ridley Scott making only his second movie, no one was banking on it being much at all.

Cut to present day and that tiny movie has inspired an enormous global franchise with box office takings of over a billion dollars, two spin-offs, novels, short films and video games, and the kind of devoted fanbase normally reserved for boybands.

Scott himself departed the franchise after the original, but returned in 2012 with Prometheus, an epic big-budget prequel to the original movie and, after that proved a big hit, he is back at it again with Alien: Covenant.

Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, who return from Prometheus. They are joined by a newly cast Danny McBride, Katherine Waterston, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Billy Crudup, James Franco, Alexander England and Benjamin Rigby.

It is the follow-up to Prometheus and picks up after the events of that movie. In this film, we follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant who find what they believe to be an uncharted paradise in a remote galaxy. Instead what the crew discover is a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, the survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

The movie hits cinemas on May 12th and available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-Ray and Steelbook (exclusive to hmv) on the right-hand side of the page, but we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it...

Michael Fassbender is on top form...

Covenant finds Fassbender on double duty, playing both the dastardly David, a role he first played in Prometheus, and Walter, a more amenable new synthetic. He’s chilling and compelling in both roles.

But Katherine Waterston steals the show...

It’s been quite the rapid rise for the British-born actress since she starred in 2014’s Inherent Vice, after excellent turns in Steve Jobs and Fantastic Beasts, she leads the way here as the no-nonsense Daniels. She’ll earn comparisons with Weaver’s Ellen Ripley for this role, that’s big talk, but it’s well-deserved.

It looks incredible…

Book after book has been written about the groundbreaking designs of H. R. Giger for the original movie and the bold spirit of that work is still alive in Covenant. The look and feel of the planet, the ship, the costumes and the creatures are stunning. Bold design is still a trademark of this franchise.

It’s action-packed…

The thrill factor has definitely be upped for this movie. There are more jumps, more scares and more action set pieces this time around and that’s a welcome move.

The ending sets things up perfectly for another adventure...

Spoilers? You’ll get none here. But we know that Scott is already prepping Alien: Awakening and the way things finished up with Covenant sets things up brilliantly. It was five years between Prometheus and Covenant, let’s hope for a much tighter turnaround.

Alien: Covenant is released into cinemas on May 12th and will be available to pre-order from hmv’s online store on the same day.
