Ben Affleck steps down as director of The Batman
Ben Affleck has stepped down as director of standalone Batman movie The Batman.
Affleck had been due to co-write, star and direct the new movie, but will now relinquish the director's chair.
He told Variety in a statement: "There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film."
He continued: "I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world."
Warner Brothers added: "Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life."
The search is now on for a new director, with the report suggesting that War For The Planet Of The Apes director Matt Reeves has already been approached.
Affleck's first solo Batman movie does not have a confirmed release date as yet. There are currently two unknown DC movies scheduled for October 5th in 2018, and November 1st in 2019, with The Batman potentially in line for one of those slots.
It has already been confirmed that Joe Manganiello, best known for his roles in True Blood and Magic Mike XXL, has been cast as Deathstroke, the villain for the standalone movie.
Though Deathstroke, who one of the most fearsome assassins in DC comics' repetoire, is confirmed to face down the Dark Knight in the standalone movie, though whether he will make an appearance in this year's Justice League is still unknown.
